Ducks begin season
without QB quagmire
By Steve Mims
Emerald Sports Reporter
If the Oregon Ducks arc to
Improve on last season's 3-8
debacle, confidence and opti
mism must start at the top, and
starting quarterback Danny
O'Noll seems to have those
traits.
"It's not optimism, it's confi
dence,” O'Noll said. “Thore is
no question we'll be a good
football team and go to a bowl,
it's )ust a matter of which bowl,
maybe oven the Rose Bowl."
If that sounds overly optimis
tic. It is, but O'Neil and the rest
of the Oregon squad havo many
reasons to feel good about the
upcoming season. This year's
team appears to have two
things last year's didn't: health
and depth.
Last year, O'Neil went into
camp as one of four quarter
backs battling for the starting
)ob. This year, he has been the
No. 1 man all along and the in
creased confidence shows.
O'Neil showed flashes of bril
liance during the first two
games of 1991 in leading tho
Ducks to a 2-0 record.
O’Neil tied a school record
by throwing four touchdown
passos in a 28-13 victory at
Texas Tech. In five games, he
threw for 713 yards and seven
touchdowns while tossing only
throe interceptions.
O'Neil will have a lot more
help on offense this season, es
pecially at halfback, where a
three-way battle for the starting
spot took place in the fall. Se
nior Donovan Moore, junior
Sean Burwell and redshlrt
freshman Ricky Whittlo could
all see significant playing time
this season.
Moore was the only running
back to stay healthy throughout
last year and says that may be
his greatest asset.
