Conway leaves Mini, bench behind
By Dave Oartoonneau

When Oregon's volleyball
team has its homo opener this
Friday, ono of the leaders of the
team will bo a player who has
yet to play a single point on
McArthur Court.
Anne Conway trinsforcd
front Illinois to plav her senior
year for the Ducks and is hop
ing increased playing time and
an underdog role will make her
experience at Oregon much bet
ter than at Illinois.
Conway will be a starter for
the Ducks at the middle blocker
position and will be ono of
only three seniors on a young
Oregon team. Having a solid
starting position will be some
thing relatively new to Conway
who played a utility role for the
llllni.
Conway, who has competed
in three Olympic Festivals,
never quito understood why
she found herself on the bench
often at Illinois.
"1 don't know what the deal
was at Illinois," Conway said.
"! guoss my coach just saw me
as more of a role player thun a
starter because 1 was versatile
and bocause 1 could play loft
side, middle side and right. Ac
tually, 1 played quite a bit and I
oven started a few games. "
It was her chances to play in
the Olympic Festivals that kept
her ploying volleyball.

"Those experiences were

me positive about playing vol

Conway became so frustrated
with the situation at Illinois,
that she originally planned to
drop volleyball altogether her
senior year anil concentrate on
her schooling. Hut then she re
ceived a call from Oregon
coach Gerry Gregory asking her
to come to Eugene.
“Gerry called me and my
parents told mo it would l>e dif
