Monson files suit with University

Basketball — Former men's
head coach Don Monson Is su
ing tho University for more
than 5400,000 after being fired
last spring.
Monson Is seeking 5425,7BH
that he would have received for
the remaining two years on his
contract. The lawsuit was filed
on Juiy 22 and contends that
Monson's dismissal was a
breach of contract, which wlii
expire June 30. *094 Tho Uni
versity claims It was not u
broach of contract because
Monson was not fired, but rath
or reassigned as coordinator for
compliance and eligibility but
failed to show up for work
Monson's contract entitled
him to a base salary of 579,408
a year Monson is also seeking
5221,066 in endorsement con
tracts outsido the University.
Neither Monson nor the Uni
versity would comment on the
lawsuit

gon men's basketball team held
its awards banquet in early
summer

was voted most inspirational
player of the Tar Heels'
1990-91 Final Four team.
Olympics — A number of
former Ducks and Eugeno resi
dents competed in the Summer
Olympics held in Barcelona,
Spain. The top performance
turned in by an athlete with
ties to Eugene was Kory Tar
panning’s fourth place finish in
the pole vault.
Among former University
athletes who competed were
Paula Berry in the javelin, Pe
dro da Silva in the decathlon.
Ken Flax in the hammer. Dan
ny Lopez in the steeplechase,
Lisa Ondoiki and Cathy
O'Brien in the marathon, and
Annette Peters in tho 3.000 me
ters.
Eugene residents who made
the trip to Barcelona were
Lance DcbI in the hammer.
Steve Plascencia in the
lO.OOOmeters and Shelly Steely
in the 3,000 meters.
Golf — Steve Nosier was
named as Oregon's new men's
golf coach. Nosier is the former
head of the Oregon Golf Associ
ation. He replaces Scott Kriog
nr, who left to be the assistant
professional at Broadmoor Golf
Course in Portland. Krieger
coached at Oregon for eight
years before resigning in Janu
ary.
