Injuries and released later that
night. Two males wore hold
overnight and released the next
morning while two females re
mained in the hospital and
worn listed in fair condition as
of Sept. 10.
Injured were, Chris Miliis of
Clackamus; Lisa Butler of Ore
gon City; Rob Williams of Port
land, Hector Rios Zovala; Frank
Miles of Florence: Arik
Hessaldahl of Redmond; Rebec
ca Bruschek of Eugene; and
Laurel Kash.
Miles, 22. was held for one
night at Sacred Heart with a
back injury. Hessoldahl. 21.
spent the night in the hospital
with fractured ribs and a kid
ney contusion. Bruschek, 23.
and Kash. 19. suffered ankle in
juries and remained in the hos
pital.
Birr said paramedics were
called to the homo of Universi
ty Life Residence Director Dick
Romm at 7.10 p m. and found
"at least" eight people lying on
a hillside behind the house.
Shortly after 7 p.m., two-thirds
of the deck broke away from
the rear of the house and fell to
the ground. The deck was sup
ported by stilts about 30 feet In
the air. Birr said.
Birr said |K>lico do not know
why the 20-year-old deck col
lapsed.
But Doug Eveleth. Eugene
Building Department director,
said Inspectors who visited the
scene believe extensive dry rot
caused the deck to break loose
from thn house.
According to witnesses at the
arjcidont, there worn only ubout
a dozen people on the deck at
the time of the collapse. Birr
said.
"It Just gave way without any
readily apparent warning or
cause," he said.

about an inch.
“I told a friend to move track
(out of tho doorway),’’ MiIIis
said, "so I could Jump into the
house. Then it dropped two
mom inches and people started
screaming. I didn’t think it was
going to go. There was a big
crash and everyone was
screaming and it was total cha
os."
''Mlllis said ho tried to jump
into tho house but tho deck
suddenly fell out from under
him.
"1 fell about 30 feet straight
down and landed on mo foot."

Despite the injuries suffered
by tho people on the deck.
Millis said the accident does
have a positive side.
"It was a bonding experience
that brought everyone togeth
er." he said. "Everyone worked
as a team to help each other.”
About 65 people wore in at
tendance at thn orientation
