turns of their newborns.
The letters, ho says, he'll take with him to Co
lumbia
"I’m really, really sad that I’m leaving the class
room." he said "It’s possible that I may never
teach again."
McDonald will miss the "inherent youth" of
students, ho said, "that’s based on curiosity and
excltomont." Ho respects the journalism students,
he said, many of whom huvo jobs and work their
way through school.
"They’ve got multitudes of common sense," he?
said. "They're good, strong, dneont people.
There's very little elitism in the bunch.”
Even though he has taught for more than a do< ■
ado, he said he never completely conquered the
stage fright. "It's not like falling off a log.” he
said. "If you’re alive, you're going to be nervous.”
This might surprise some students who say he
is known for his wit, calm and self-assuredness in
the classroom.
Student Tim Wolfe, who had him for Informa
tion.Galhering, describes him as a ' neat guy" but
said ho didn’t always think that way.
“1 remember when I took the class he was sort
of the anti-Christ," Wolfe said. "Now. I realize the
stuff wo learned in that class was pretty helpful ."
One thing, he said he’s always known is that
McDonald is sure of himself.
"He was pretty cocky," his said. “That's a defi
nite trait .”
Daniel West, who was a student in two of
McDonald's classes, said overall he was a good
teacher. "He seemed very encouraging," he said
But West said, McDonald had his flaws, such as
holding a grudge.
"He would hold personal things against you."

he said, "like If you showed up Into for class "
But it's this steady, sometimes unbending ap
proach to teaching that has cam ad McDonald re
spect from his colleagues.
School of Journalism Dean Arnold Ismuch said
McDonald made enormous contributions to the
school.
"Ho had a reputation that was deserved as the
outstanding professor at this school." he said
"Ho was no pushover "
Ismuch said McDonald's departure isn’t easy to
put in words
"I don't think you rain use the language" to de
scribe his leaving, he said "I'm probably sadder
thun anybody else in this building "
Professor Lauren Kessler, who worked on sev
eral books with McDonald, describes him us "my
closest friend" at the Journalism school and one
of the most respected journalism professors.
"Because he's honest and has integrity and
cares.” she said, ho is respected When he leaves,
she said, it will be more intense than when col
lege friends part.
"I've known him for 12 years, not four,” Kes
sler said. "It's a major hole — void "
While at the University, McDonald co-authored
many books, several of which lire required read
