produced by Oregon Public
Broadcasting will focus nation
al attention on the woman be
hind the baton of the Eugene
Symphony Orchestra.
Marin Alsop, conductor of
the symphony for the past four
scusons. has been chosen as the
subject of a one-hour documen
tary tentatively titled Music in
Her Veins.
The documentary, set to be
gin filming in November, will
trace Alsop's meteoric rise from
a student at tho Julliurd School
of Music, to studying with
famed conductor Loonard Bern
stein, and to national promi
nence as an outstanding con
ductor in her own right.

liant young career is documen
tary material.
“She’s phenomenal," Kam
morer said. "She will probably
become one of the major con
ductors of tho 20th Century,
and she will probably be the
first woman to conduct a major
orchestra
The documentary Sot its first
financial boost from the Wood
ard family Foundation of Fu
gene, which has pledged to
contribute S10.000 to OPB for
production of the film. Final
production costs are estimated
at S360.000.

Casey Woodard said the docu
mentary will provide national
exposure for Alsop and the Fu
geno arts community.
"Wo have a natural treasure
in our presence here in Fu
gene." Woodard said. "We so
rarely have an opportunity to
show the country what we havo
here.”
Alsop is a native of Now
York She attended Yale Uni
versity and received her Was
ters Degree from the Julliard
School of Music. She was twice
awarded the Leonard Bernstein
Conducting Fellowship to the
Tanglowood Music Festival,
where she studied with Bern
stein.
In 1990, Alsop became the
first woman to conduct sub
scription concerts with the Los
Angeles Philharmonic. The
same year she became the first
woman to conduct the Boston
Pops Orchestra in its 107-year
history.
