By now. every student with
any concorn for his or her fu
ture regrets not taking u tougher
stand ugainst Measure 5 in
1990. As a result, the Universi
ty is facing its worst crisis in re
cent history.
Unfortunately, the worst has
yot to come. As subsequent
phases of Measure 5 take effect,
the University will have an In
creasingly difficult time surviv
ing. According to Robert Nosse.
executive director of the Ore
gon Student Lobby, thure is
even a possibility that the Uni
versity could cease to exist us a
public institution.
Fortunately, there is still
something you can do to save
our school. Currently, efforts
are being made to persuade
Gov Barbara Roberts to call a
special session of the State Leg
islature. If successful, the re
sults of the special session
could he a referendum de
signed to replace revenue lost
to Measure 5. A possible out
come will bo a ballot measure
in September, In which voters
will decide whether to support
new taxes or allow the state s
colleges and universities to
continue to decay.
In order to save our Universi
ty, it is vital that students be
come active in the political pro
cess. Theru are several things
you can do to fight for higher
education
• Register to vole at your sum
mer address.
• Vote and mail In your ballot
• Sign the split-roll petition
• Write your state representa
tive
• Tell your friends to do the
same.
