‘I the weather it good, the clast of 1992 won t have to be inside McArthur Court, like the 1934 grad
uates did.
You’re out; time to celebrate
For those who are graduating this (arm,
things can be hectic enough with classes,
deadlines and tmals, to even start thinking
about the graduation ceremony
But don't worry because the University has a
ceremony planned especially to complement the
atmosphere ol the school
"The ceremony is lor them (the graduates), '
said Mary Hudzikiewicz. assistant director ol stu
dent development We try to make it festive not
formal Vou don't have to sit in alphabetical or
der The day is lor them "
So the graduate doesn't need to stress about
knowing the proper graduation etiquette The
University wants the ceremony to be an enjoy
able way to recognize the graduates
The ceremony is noon Sunday, June 14 at
Autzen Stadium It it rams on this day it will be
held in McArthur Court
The admission is tree, but the only drawback
is if it rains the graduates have tour tickets to
give to their guests tor the ceremony in McArthur
Court due to the limited seating
Graduates need not worry it they have al
ready invited 20 ol their doses! tnends and rela
tives to the ceremony because the University
has only held it at McArthur Court once in the
last twenty years, according to Hudzikiewicz.
There will be about 18,000 guests and 1,800
graduates at the ceremony, that's why we don't
tit mto McArthur Court." Hudzikiewicz said
it it's a sunny day. it might be interesting tor
undergraduates to go and see what they will
soon be experiencing themselves The air is
sure to be charged with pure joy as the gradu
ates complete the last step of their University ex
perience
During the ceremony, every group of degrees
will be recognized, wilh a special recognition for
the Ph D students Not every student's name will
be read, so the ceremony is expected to last
about two hours instead of 20.
University President Myles Brand will present
the University awards for this academic year in
cluding a posthumous degree to Michael Boss, a
graduate student who died one month before he
received his PhD
The speaker for the ceremony is N. Scott
Momaday. a Pulitzer Prize-winning native Ameri
can author Momaday is a member of the Kiowa
tribe and an English professor at the University
of Arizona
The class of 1942 will be recognized during
the ceremony to continue the tradition of inviting
back the class that graduated 50 years ago.
Hudzikiewicz said there will be approximately 70
members of the class attending.
Diplomas will not be handed out during the
actual ceremony The degrees will be conferred
beforehand so the graduates don't need to
stress whether they made it or not. The gradu
ates will have to wait 10 to 12 weeks to get the
diplomas by mail
After the ceremony is over, many depart
ments have their own celebrations and recep
tions to honor their students This tradition has
been started because "most students identify
with then majors." Hudzikiewicz said
"This is an opportunity for a smaller setting,''
she said, adding it allows the students to get
more personal recognition from their department
and faculty.
Enjoy commencement and congratulations to
the graduating seniors'
