There are tons of close-ups, quick cuts and skewed camera angles. Most of these are more distracting than enhancing. The look isn't all had - it's just too deliberately gloomy. It seems as if only grays and browns were used in the production design. Ripley is made to be mythic and overtly Christ-like in this movie. Insteadofgetlingdown to the business of scaring the audi ence. this movie prefers to sim plistically show Ripley as a sav ior. Unfortunately, too, the film makers do nothing to try and explore the potential of the plot. The fact that all the supporting actors and actresses are con demned to live out their lives in a dark hell is not examined. The movie's biggest flaw is its lack ofany real scares. While the first two movies spent the long, slow periods building suspense, this one is just long and slow. The movie is not all bad, though. Every action seems de liberate and believable, and the camerawork - lighting aside - is fast paced and often exciting. But overall, those expecting the power and terror of the first two movies can forget it. This one falls short. JOIN NOWI DOC'S (TV . i) * COCKTAIL RESEARCH TEAM 165 W.
