Athletes give thumbs up to Hayward Reid By Dave Charbonneau and Jake Berg E morale) Sports Writers Track athletes find something at Hayward Field they may have trouble finding in abun dance anywhere else: support. Eugeno has earned the title us "Track Town, USA" by claim ing to have the most supportive fans in the nation. Hoywrrd has played host to the Olympic Tri als. NCAA Championships and will host this weekend's I’aclf ic-1l) Conference Champion ships And Eugene will likely have its share of big meets in the future. The addition of the new Bowerman Building adds to the impressiveness of Huywurd. "1 think everyono is interest ed in the new building," said Oregon women's head couch Tout Heinonen "They see it as another piece, making it bigger and belter than ever." Huywurd also lures many of the top track athletes coming out of high school to Oregon. "The first lime 1 competed here was in the high school mile my junior yeur." Oregon runner Tyo Van Schoiack said. "The crowd was so loud, after that I knew this is where I wanted to go." Even Oregon's opponents en joy competing in Eugene be cause they like the fact the funs am so supportive of the sport. “1 just love computing here." Arizona decalhlete Mutt Dullow said. "There's nowhere like it anywhere.” "It's exciting to compote at Hayward." Arizonu runner Marc Davis said. "Just the aura of Hayward Field mukcs you compote better. Even if you’re not from Oregon, if you run a good race, the fans appreciate that." The impact the crowd has on the races is so great that some times Oregon athletes get a bum rap because people think the only reason they are able to get good limes is because of the momentum they get from the crowd. "I read a story once that picked me to finish eighth In a race at Hayward because 1 would be running in front of 'those wild, rowdy Hayward Field fans,' " Van Scholack said, “it's true, though. I want to perform well outside of Hay ward so I can prove myself." livery once in a while some one will give Hayward a bud name. U's no secret thut Oregon funs have been known to not got along with Washington Slate men's couch John Chap lin. Earlier this season, a fan yelled obscenities at Chaplin al the end of u dual meet. "1 don't mind coming to Ore gon.” Chaplin said ”1 like hav ing meets at Hayward. It's just too bad when one or two peo ple have to get filthy and ruin It for everyone else." But for the most part, teams from around the Pac-10 have no problem with Hayward funs. "I like to go up in the stands and knock a couple of fans out. personally." UCLA head Coach Bob Larsen Joked. "We've nev er had any problems with the funs at Hayward. We’ve always had good experiences up there."
