Campus clean-up set for University Day

An army of spring (loaners will descend
upon campus Thursday when more than
1,000 University students, faculty and staff
are expelled to beautify the? campus .is a
part of the third annual University Day
This is a great opportunity for students
to directly affect their environment while
having fun and working with other mem
tiers of the' campus community, said Uni

This year s slogan for the event is "The

c lean up activities will Include pressure
washing walls and sidewalks, painting
lampposts, planting flowers, spreading
barkdust and pic king up litter
The day's goals are to inspire higher < am
pus morale, tec provide a direct outlet lor
part It ipants to improve their living environ
men! and to promote c amaraderie between
students, fat uity and stall

"We needed to provide some incentive
because University Day is a fairly young
event, plus it is good advertising for next
year." Cole said
The budget for the event was 10 percent
smaller than last year In 1091. the budget
was $8,800 This year the budget was only
$5,100 The administration donated $2,500,
tile Incidental Tee Committee allocated
$1,000. Myles brand donated $1,000 and
S500 was donated by Klnkos and Axiom

Some students, angry with the res ent cut
backs. have said that University Day is just

V'ejlupek. co-director of the planning team,
in a press release

son created University Dav in an effort t»
have a more service-oriented, constructive
campus community The event grew
throughout the 1920s and attracted national
ly-known entertainers including Duke HI
llngton The event turned into Parents'
Weekend in the late 1920s and finally died
out in the 1930$
University Day was revived two years ago
after a 70-year hiatus and has been growing
ever since. In its first year, nearly 000 peo
ple participated, and last year, more than
700 joined the clean up effort
A dedication ceremony is scheduled at
12 ir> p m on the stops of Johnson Hall for a
mural created by student Christy Salto The
mural, titled COLORS, will Ik? unveiled in a
formal ceremony today at 11:30 p m in the
EMU.
Another addition to the campus will be a
large Moral "UO" to be planted in the flower
bed in front of Johnson Hall Thursday
After the ceremony, participants will re
sume cleaning until 5 p m
for more information, call the Office of
