Profs design experimental housing

A group of University professors has designed
three experimental housing units it hopes vs ill
serve .is models lor Oregon's wood industry. <is

i lie duplex type units were designed at the
Center for Housing Innovation, .1 I.u nity research
group begun four years ago All will be experi
ments in building different types of factory pm
dur ed homes
Our goal is to help Lane County develop a
pre-fabrication industry to build homes here and

I he three units were designed as part of the
Student Housing Props t. which includes building
20 apartments at tilth and Agate streets and even
tually rebuilding Amazon family bousing
University Housing officials hope construction
will begin in August and fie completed for full
term, but planners say this is ambitious
Lath of the three buildings consists of two
small two-bedroom, ono-huthroom upartments
750 square foot measured from outside the walls
They will lie built on a vacant lot in the hast cam
pus area near Villard Street.
A one-story building will use single-stressed
skin closed panels. This means one solid material
with both structural and insulating properties
would be user! for a wall, instead of the standard
stud and frame construction that would require
added insulation
A one-and a-half story building will use con

Also, although housing density is tin teased,
fiVVKB still requires six separate ys.iter meters on
the street with six separate water lines Multi unit
buildings often have one line on the street,
branching off to feed the individual units
"We need a lot of redundant systems." Sturges
said "There are over-engineered requirements we
can t find a way of avoiding."
The cost of the three buildings, including con
struction. materials, engineering and permits, is
expected to be S300.000. Corner said
University Housing officials do not know how
much the units will rent for Current faintly hous
mg occupants must first agree on how mui h of
the project's cost they will absorb in rent in
creases, said Nancy Wright, University dim tor of
facilities and capital improvements
All of the new hast campus housing will he
rented to single graduate students as well as to
student families
