decline in county, Oregon

The battle against the AIDS virus
may have taken a turn for the better,
according to recant statistics from the
Centers for Disease Control.
National statistics show a decline
in the number of new AIDS i uses and
in AIDS deaths
According to CDC, the first half of
1991 saw 18,HU5 now AIDS cases di
agnosed. and in the second half of
that year the number dropped to
14,407, a 24 percent reduction
This is the first slowing of the dis
ease since the CDC began keeping
trark of AIDS in 1981
The number of AIDS related deaths
are also tbs lining with 13.301 deaths
in the first half of 1091, and 10,608
in the second half, a reduction of
nearly 21 pert ent
That puts the number of deaths
and new ( ases bat k to 1987 levels
Dr Mark Loveless, director of the
AIDS program at Oregon Health Sci
ence University, said the numbers

drugs such as AZI mav have delayed
the onset of full-blown AIDS for
