Tennis coach
gets 300th win
By Peter Aifrey
tm» Contnt ■-'< v
Oregon men's tennis coai h
Buzz Summers joined the too
club last month.
Summers gained ins 300th
collegiate victory as the Ducks
downed Bradley, 8-1, in Nor
mal, III , on Oct 17 His overall
record of 300-24 1 moves him
past all Oregon coaches
By being the vvinningest
coach in Oregon history, Sum
mers has made quite u mark in
Duck tennis history. He still en
joys his job, even alter 25 yetirs
of coaching.
"It's fun," Summers said
"It's good to 1m; with the kids,
and Eugene is a great place.”
Although tin! sophistication
of tennis has changed, Sum
mers feels that today's players
haven't changed much from
those of long ago
"There’s not much differ
ence." Summers saidi "All the
players thrive on competition
and love the game Now, the
equipment has changed and
there are more players playing
at u higher level of competition,
but overall, the attitude hasn't
ihanged ”
Ity playing in (no Pacific-10
Conference, Oregon compotes
in what many consider to be
one of the best tennis confer
ences, if not the best, in the
country The Ducks have often
found it difficult competing
with power schools like Stan
ford, UCLA and USC
Summers believes the Ore
gon tennis program has some
disadvantages that keep it from
being at the top of the Pac-10.
"We have a lack of funds,
which keeps us from granting
scholarships to quality play
ers." he said "Plus, lacking an
indoor facility also hurts When
trying to recruit certain players,
1 try to emphasize the school's
environment and emphasis on
academics In terms of recruit
mg. that's where we re strong
est
Summers also feels that this
year's team should be better
than ones from past seasons
1 think, we have more depth
this year compared to past sea
sons,” Summers said "Unfor
tunately. 1 had to drop many
good players since only It)
make the team
"1 think we will be very com
petitive in the Pac-10 Northern
Division (which includes Ore
gon, Washington and Washing
1 i l Stale) and will be tough
against the southern schools."
The much-improved Dm ks
go on the road Nov 20, trav
eling north to fai e Portland
Then they head to Hawaii ior a
Nov 25-28 trip to face Chum;
nude, UYU-Huwail, Drake and
Hawaii.
With the typi< al budget prob
loins and with a deeper team.
Summers seems right at home
couching the Oregon men's ton
ms team and leading it to a
brighter future
