Speaker favors wind power
Ry Kirsten Lucas
Emtwaid Reporter
Thu IJnitnd Stales needs to
implement a long term, innova
tive national energy policy that
includes renewable energy
sources, said the director ol re
search for the Union of Con
( erned Scientists.
In .1 Wednesday night lecture
titled 'Fueling the Future," Mi
chael Brower stressed the eco
nomic and environmental ne
( essity lor alternatives to fossil
fuels, such as wind and solar
power
The burning of fossil fuels lor
energy is the primary source of
carbon dioxide emissions,
Brower said
Carbon dioxide is one of the
dreaded greenhouse gases,
which are widely believed to
contribute to the recent trend of
global warming, otherwise
known as the greenhouse effect.
This trend, blamed for seven
of the all-time hottest years in
the last decade, should be of
great concern to the United
States, Brower said
(fompu tor-genera ted scenar
ios project a temperature in
crease of r> degrees Celsius for
the central United States in the
latter half of the next century,
he said
Not only should the United
States be worried about the en
vironmental and economic im
pact of global warming, it
should take responsibility for
solving the problem as well,
Brower said
"The reason I think it’s so
important to focus on U S en
ergy policy is because we are
responsible for 21 percent of
the greenhouse gases," Brower
said
"We have a great deal of re
sponsibility for the problem,"
he said "One part of the solu
tion is to switch from fossil
fuels to alternatives "

Homage to the Humble Carrot:
Prior lo Ihc 16ih century the carrot was primarily used for medicinal
purposes.
A. M. A. research has shown that the beta-carotene which gives '
carrots their color has both antiviral and cancer-preventative
characteristics.
The white stuff at the bottom of the Genesis carrot juice bottle is
calcium!

• When fresh and young the nutrient rich carrot greens may be finely
chopped and sauteed or added to soups as you would parsley.
• The ancient Greek world for carrot, phtlon. comes from the Greek
word for Un/e, as this root was considered an aphrodisiac.

Such alternatives include ad
vances in the technology of re
newable resources, particularly
in tilt; urea-of wind power,
Ilrower said
California is at the forefront
til this technology, he said. Al
though California has relatively
low wind resources, turbines at
large wind farms there generate
1-2 percent of the state's elec
tricity, providing enough kilo
watt-hours to meet the residen
tial needs of approximately 1
million people
A kilowatt-hour is tho
amount of electrical energy
consumed when 1,000 watts
are used for one hour.
Compared with California,
Oregon's wind resources have
the potential to generate ft) per
cent to 100 percent of the
state's electricity, he said.
Moreover, wind power is be
coming the cheapest renewable
electricity resource, close in
price to fossil fuel, Ilrower said
Solar energy, on the other
hand, is a more expensive alter
native in the short run because
it is a < apit.il-intensive technol
