College of Education looks past changes, toward future By Carrie Dennelt i mer.Vc) Associate Editor A College of education facul ty committee is putting forth a new mission and organization for the school, along the way debunking the myth that the entire college has fallen under the ax of Measure 5. Although the College's Teacher Education and Educa tional Psychology programs have been cut, nationally ranked programs in special ed ucation and rehabilitation, edu cational policy and manage ment and counseling psycholo gy will continue. "Contrary to reports in the popular media, the College still exists, and the programs that remain are extremely strong and healthy." according to Tlw Leader, a College of Education Alumni newsletter. "Now the surviving programs must begin the process both painful and exciting of looking to the fu ture.” The Future College Commit tee has looked at ways of unit ing the existing divisions into a new College of Education In cusing on research, training and service in education. None of the cut programs ac cepted new students lor the 1 *><> 1 -‘J2 academic year, hut all graduate Teacher Education programs and the Educational Psychology program will re main open through the 1992-92 academic year to allow current students to finish. Undergradu ate Teacher Education will he open until June 1992. Although the fifth-year Teacher Education program has been cut, the University may continue to offer training and certification courses for stu dents who want to become sec ondary-level music and foreign language teachers. On July 2(>, 1991, the com mittee submitted a proposed mission and reorganization plan to the Provost’s office for review.
