Get involved with city committees
By Daralyn Trappe
Emerald Associate Editor
If you've ever wuntod to lx1 part of the solution,
here's your opportunity
The City of Eugene is looking for interested citi
zens to fill up to 70 seats on over 20 different citi
zen boards, commissions and committees These
groups advise city staff members and make ret -
ommendations to the City Count il on issues rang
ing from cultural services and human rights to
public safety and business development
"A lot of times, these committees or commis
sions have specific tasks, while others handle is
sues as they come up," said Phil VVeiler, Public
Information Specialist for the City Manager's Of
fice
The Human Rights Commission, for example,
works with c ity officials to ensure that the city is
providing equal opportunities to all citizens In
addition, the group cooperates with the State Bu
reau of Labor and other governmental agencies in
ns eiving, referring and investigating xpe< ific acts
of discrimination
The Riverfront Research Park Commission,
conduits research, holds hearings, studies, inves
tigates, analv/.es and makes evaluations of pro
posals concerning development for the Riverfront
Research Park property Four of the members are
selis ted by University President Myles Brand and
the other three are nominated by Eugene Mayor
Jeff Miller
"In every case where (the Riverfront Research
Park Commission) has made a recommendation,
it's been accepted." said Cathy Brinnr, deputy di
re< tor of Planning and Development for the city
"Their advise is taken very seriously "
The Eugene Cultural Affairs Commission ad
vises the City Council on policy matters and the
City Manager and the Performing Arts director of
operation matters regarding the Hull Center for
the Performing Arts.
Each group has a different requirement for
length of service. Members of the Human Rights
Commission, for example, an- appointed for three
year terms, will members of the Riverfront Re
search Park Commission serve for two years.
The appointment process also varies The City
Council appoints most members, but some are
nominated first by the mayor and some are ap
pointed directly by the mayor Those appointed
begin their terms in January
Application are available at the City Manager's
office m City Hall. 777 Pearl St., Room 105, or
call (>87-5010 for more details Forms must be
