date already, and UCLA is hoping he plays up to
that billing.
Should Maddox become injured or be sidelined
lor am other reason, the Bruins' season could
turn out like last year's 5-1. nightmare for coach
Terry Donahue.
Like Washington, the Bruins have seven return
ers on both offense and defense, and although
UCLA lost two first-team all-conference player
from the defense, the Bruins' defensive back Held

conference.
Punter Tommy Thompson
and kicker Gregg McCallum,
both second-team all-confer
ence selections a year ago. will
kick for Oregon this season
Brown was the Ducks' main
punt returner last year und will
likely fill that position again
tilis fall. Burwell was used of
ten on kick ruturns last year
und may return in that spot this
year.

analysts seems to bo that Ore
gon will finish In the middle of
the Pac*10, but the Ducks, even
in the last two seasons, tradi
tionally don't receive much at
tention during the pre-season.
"It's a real problem for prog
nosticators to decide where in
the hell to pul us," Brooks said.
"Most people don't want to put
us ahead of those guys, so we
end up in the middle of the
pack. A fow of them get bold
und pick us us high as fourth.
"It doesn't bother mo where
they pick us. It’d bother me if
we finished fifth because I
think we should bo bolter than
that."
