and "The Earth Speaks,” were
opposed on grounds that they
promoted New Age religion
and inaccurate science.
Oregon school districts have
the authority to use any materi
als listed by the state textbook
commission, said Kathryn Mur
dock, director ol legal services
for the stale school superin
tendent's office
Murdock noted that the Leg
islature has shifted the respon
sibility for selecting school ma
terials from the commission to
the state superintendent's of
fice, beginning this year.
