reer is over, Horry will tochni
r ally remain n collegiate, and a
contender for the NCAA re
coni, until the end of the sum
mer.
Berry is also shooting for the
school record of 202-3, sot by
l.vnda Hughes in 1082
Horry has even followed
Smith's advice hy going to Eu
rope and competing to gain
some international experience
Last summer, both Berry and
t'SC's Ashley Selman compet
ed in Europe, and both will do
the same this season at Smith's
urging
"I had suggested last year to
Sally (Harmon, Oregon throws
coach) that if it did work out
for Paula that she should go
over to Europe and get some in
ternational experience." Smith
said. "1 think that's really
helped Paula this season."
After turning on late in the
season last year by winning the
Pacific-10 Conference title at
178-1 and finishing second to
Selman at the NCAA meet, Ber
ry quickly hit her stride and
kept improving this season.
She qualified for the NCAAs
in her first meet of the season,
the Oregon Preview She then
got her first personal record of
the season with a throw of
182-2 in a dual meet with
Washington
Berry followed up with a win
at the Pepsi Team Invitational
and with runner-up showings
at the Mt SAC Relays and the
Catorade Invitational in Caines
villo, Ela . before she unleashed
a PR of 107-7 at the Minnesota
Invitational
Altt'r .1 week nil, Hern won
her second Pac-10 title with ;i
throw of 19:t-8, a new meet re
cord Her ties! showing wus at
the Les Steers Open, where she
had five throws of more than
1 BO feet and three butter than
too feet, including tier 202-t
PR
Despite bad headwinds, she
threw 188-5 to win the NCAA
meet and threw 191-7 to finish
second to Smith at TAC
Herry and Selman will tie
fi.u k in Europe next month,
competing on an international
circuit in Finland that consists
of six meets
Smith will also fie on hand
(or the meets and says it should
fie a gtxai experience for Herry
"Competing over there last
year was obviously very good
lor Paula," Smith said "I know
the Finns are excited to have
her back
As the top two collegiate fin
ishers at TAC, Berry and
Selman will compete in the
World University Carnes in
Sheffield, England. July 19-25.
Then It's off to the World
Championships in Tokyo on
Aug 24-Sept. 1 for both Berry
and Smith.
Somewhere along the line.
Smith sees Berry breaking her
collegiate record
"I think Paula can throw fur
ther," Smith said. “1 think she
has a lot of 200-plus throws in
her. and I think she'll surprise
some people at Tokyo "
Berry is surprised she's
reached the level she has so
soon, chasing the likes of
Smilh. who is a four-11me
Olympian and a seven-time
TAC chump
"I never dreamed I’d he chas
ing a four-time Olympian,"
Berry said "I'm still trying to
get used to it
