Ducks add two NCAA qualifiers
Stone, Strahm give Oregon six wrestlers for national meet

Oregon will be sending six wrestlers to the
N'CAA Championships Mart h 14-10 in Iowa Pile
Iowa, as two more Out ks were added as wildcard
qualifiers after the Pacific 10 Conference meet
Sunday
Seniors Rob Stone (142 pounds) and Cam
Strahm (heavyweight), who both finished fourth
at the Pac-lOs. were added as two of the eight
wildcard entries selected by the conference
coaches after the meet However, freshman Mat
Sprague (107 pounds) wasn’t picked as a
wildcard entry. He will he an alternate for the
NCAAs.

Yidlak. Scott Clenn, Darren Gustafson and Curt
Strahm at the NCAA meet
The top three finishers in each weight i lass
qualify for the NCAAs, and four of the six Oregon
wrestlers will be making return appearances at
the NCAA Championships
The Ducks finished third behind Arizona State
and Gal-State Bakersfield in the team standings,
which was right about whore Coach Ron l-'inlev
had the Ducks figured in before the meet
"We certainly would have liked to have done
better, but second or third was where I thought
we would be and that’s how it c ame out."
Finley was also extremely pleased that Oregon
was able to get six wrestlers to the \<! A A Tourna
ment after sending five to nationals last season
"I think there were some great competitive et
forts." he said "It was a tough tournament and
extremely balanced Seven out of the 10 weight
classes had champions from different sc.hoots
"It's the toughest Pac-10 tournament I’ve seen
in a long time."

He was the toughest he's been all year (at the

Stone started the season at 11-4 pounds but re
centlv moved up to 142 pounds so (denn could
drop down to 1 14 pounds Because of that, l inlev
said there was some doubt whether Stone would
make the NCAAs as a wildcard entry, despite 2r>
wins this season
"There was a lot of concern there liecause he
had been at 1.14 all year." l inlev said "Rob's
proven he's not somebodv anyone would like to
w resile
With four \< AA veterans returning to the tour
nainent, the Dinks could improve on last year's
tilth place finish there, but l inlev said Oregon
will need help from Stone and (mstnfson to do
well in low a ( atv
"It's a hard one to predict." he said "(aula inly
we want to be as high as we can be We ll need
big efforts from Dan. Scott (ilenn and Curt
Strahm. our mainstays
"We also need to win matches at other places
loo." l inlev said Certainly there will be some
non ranked, non seeded people line k there and
we need to w 111 some matchers there
