Don’t ‘Come See The Paradise’ COME SEE THE PARADISE R Movies 12 ™ Gateway ★ ★ * ' Oom (attar ** 'Wauwii **«'W*tttt*«m **** *tlUM jassasaBBoamm By Don Peters Emerald Associate Editor Director Alan Parker has taken on con troversial and socially-conscious films before. The results have been impressive. His Midnight Express won him an Academy Award, and Mississippi Burning was nominated for seven Oscars. Shunt the Moon and Angel Heart also caused stirs But Parker's latest offering — Come See The Paradise— falls far short of past efforts. Parker is given an extraordinary topic (World War II Japanese-American internment camps) but fails to come up with a convincing product. Come See The Paradise stars Dennis Quaid as Jack McOum. a labor movement agitator who flees 1936 New York only to meet Lily Kawamura (Tamilyn Tomita) — a movie operator's Nisei (Amorican born) daughter in Los Angelos' Little To kyo district. Predictably, Quaid goes to work as a projectionist in Mr. Kawamura's movie theater, sees Lily anti falls instantly In Invo. Despite family objections. Lily and lack run off to Sonttln to get married anti oscufKt California's anti-Japanese laws Thn first half of (ho movin is long winded and shallow. Thn lovn sconns be twoon Qoaid and Tomita am sappy, aophomoric, and tako away from what could have boon an excellent movie. There am some good parts to Jake's courtship of Lily, such as Quaid doing an impromptu mimic of a song-and-danco routine from an old Japanese musical, but such scenes are few and aren't enough to carry the film. The bombing of Pearl Harbor provides the turning point of the movie. Parker fi ll.illy displays his talents as he shows the relocation and internment of 100,000 Japanoso-Americans, two-thirds of whom are American citizens. Scenes such as where the Kawnmuni family burns and breaks their posses sions rather than sell them off to gougers, and glimpses of life in the Manzanar in ternment camp, are the most powerful in the movie. Although Quaid gets the top hilling, Come See The Paradise is really Tomita's film. Given her limited background in movies such as Karate Kid II and soap operas, Tomita is marvelous. Quaid's role is a surface one, ducking in anti out of scenes and never making much of an im pact. If there is a surprise in Come See The Paradise, it is Lily's younger brother Charlie, played by Stan Lgl.
