Students shocked by news of war
By Daralyn Trappe
Emerald Reporter
Students who gathered
around TV sets on campus
VVednesdav reacted with fear
and disbelief to news that U.S.
planes were bombing targets in
Baghdad
"I'm scared because i know
guvs over there." said Todd
Hesse, a senior who joined
about 25 others in front of the
TV in the EMU Her Center "1
didn’t think it would happen
this quick."
Graduate student Anthony
Mattison said he had mixed
feelings about using the mili
tary to force Iraqi President
Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait.
"Part of me says, yeah. I'm
glad to see that oppressive re
gime destroyed.” Mattison
said. "But a lot of Americans
will die."
Senior Jeanne Rust said more
effort should have been made
to reach a diplomatic diplomat
ic solution.
"I can't believe they didn't
have more talks." she said.
"This only started five or six
months ago."
College Republicans. Presi
dent Garth Hernandez urged
support for the ITS. troops rum
fighting a war in the Middle
Hast
"1 may not agree with the
way it was carried out or what
happened," he said of the C S
military strike, "but our first
concern now should ho about
bringing our men and women
home as soon as possible "
The news of the C S air
strike was especially upsetting
to Khaled Al lassim. a I'niver
sity student from Kuwait
"I'm scared. I'm worried
a trout it," he said in phone in
terview from his Kugene home
"This is a bigger mess than I
expected
Two other Kuwaiti students,
friends of Al-Jassim. have left
the University since the end of
fall term to volunteer as inter
preters for U.S. and allied
troops in Saudi Arabia
Meanwhile other University
students tiegan It) discuss the
possibilit\ ot <i military draft if
the battle to free Kuwait from
lrai| is not completed swiftly
"I'm afraid of a draft ." said
senior John (irunkemeier "I
want to think it (the war) will
be short, fmt 1 don’t believe
that’s right It might take a
while."
University President Mvles
Itrand issued a statement
Wednesday night tailing for
students and fat ult\ memliers
to "join in mutual comfort anil
support" during the uncertain
ty of war
lirantl also expressed concern
for the eight University stu

active duty in the National
Cuard or military reserves as
part of Operation Desert Shield
"We share the anxiety that
their friends and families arc
experiencing, and all our hearts
are with our men and women
