Re/a Hehnam, executive director of the Institute for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies, said the l nited States has haded Arab nations into a corner and now must look for a peaceful solu tion to the conflict in the Persian Gulf. Meetina echoes anti-war sentiment By Brian Bloch fcmerald Reportei More than 100 people e< hoed an overwhelming anti-war sen timent during a crowded town meeting at the Lane County Courthouse in Kugene Tuesday night just hours before the United Nation's deadline for the withdrawl of Iraqi troops from Kuwait, a panel of four speak ers led the crowd on an emo tional discussion of the Gulf crisis. In the face of a likely con frontation between the United Status and Iraq, all of the panel members urged citizens to con tinue protesting war and lobby ing leaders for peace. Steve |ohnson. an executive with Decision Research and au thority on U S military issues, said there is "little doubt" that U S warships and tactical ground troops in the gulf arc equipped with nuclear weap ons. Although he said there is lit tle i ha nee of an accidental det onation. the possibility exists that one of tin1 more than loot) nuclear weapons Johnson esti mated are in the hands of U S. troops in the gulf may be dam aged and cause some contami nation He said even if the deploy ment or accidental detonation of nut lear weapons is avoided, many lives will be lost to newly advanced weaponry used in conventional warfare. "Technology has brought to the liattle field a groat potential for destruction." Johnson said "This may lie the fastest casual ty rate war in world history." Dr M Ke/.a Behnam, Execu tive Director of the Institute for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies, said the United States has forced countries in that re gion intu a corner and should now opt for a peaceful end to the confrontation. He blamed the U.S. govern ment for what he termed cul tural ignorance and nationalist policy making for bringing about a confrontation in the re gion Hehnam said individuals and the government must begin a process of international un derstanding to solve the deep rooted problems in the Middle Hast. “I don't think it's too ex t r e m e to ask that all of us...should at least try to un derstand each other, or we will indeed die,” he said. Vietnam veteran John Mactliver told the gathering to unite in support of the soldiers in the gulf region. He said indi viduals must protest the actions of the government, not the sol diers. in advocating peace.
