Beavers post rare Civil War win
OSU ends 11-game losing streak to Oregon women, 74-58
By Jake Berg
Emerald Sports Reporter
Forget that Oregon State had
lost its last 11 games to Oregon.
Forget that the Beavers had
won only once at McArthur
Court since 1976. Forget the
Oregon State team of a year ago
that finished 5-26 and last in
the Pacific-10 Conference.
Forget, and one may not have
been surprised at what hap
pened Friday night.
An underrated Beaver team
walked into Mac Court Friday
with an impressive 8-4 mark,
and left the Ducks' home court
with a 74-58 win that stunned
the 1,354 in attendance.
Oregon Coach Glwin Heiny
though was one of the few not
surprised by Oregon State's
performance.
"Oregon State is a lot better
than anyone realizes," Heiny
said. "They can get in the top
five in the league."
Oregon State upped its re
cord to 9-4 overall, and 1-2 in
the Pac-10. Oregon dropped to
7-6 with its third straight loss
and is 0-3 in the conference.
Rebounding and an intense
Oregon State defense derailed
the Ducks in the first half. In
the opening half alone, the lea
vers pulled down a monstrous
29 rebounds and forced 10 Ore
gon turnovers.
"1 really think the rebounds
and the turnovers that first half
were the key," Heiny said. "It
set the tone, it set the lead.”

Seeming to set a tone for the
game, Oregon sank two break
away lay-ins to jump out to a
4-0 start. Unfortunately for the
Ducks, it was their last lead of
the game.
Oregon State ran off 11
straight points to put distance
between itself and tlm Ducks,
and though Oregon pulled
within 13-12 on an 8-2 run of
its own. the Beavers dominated
the opening 20 minutes.
Guard Izzy Maryntschak was
responsible for five of Oregon
State's first 11 points, includ
ing the Beavers’ first three
pointer all year
The play of Oregon State’s
guards was somewhat unex
pected. as the Beavers' inside
game had been more highly
touted, hut Maryntschak and
reserve guards Kathy Smith
and Margo Evashevski dis
pelled rumors of a suspect Bea
ver backcourt by combining for
22 first-half points.
Of the Beavers' 20 first-half
rebounds, the Ducks allowed
Beaver forward Sonjhia Flem

The Heavers had 11 offensive
rebounds, and many of those
boards led to easy baskets and
an tl-point lead at intermis
sion. 36-25.
Oregon State exploded in the
second half as it did the first,
opening the half on a 17--4 run
which banished any Oregon
hopes of a comeback |udy
Shannon, the Heavers' leading
scorer at 2 1 points a contest, hit
for eight consecutive points on
her way to an lH-point night.
Debbie Sporcich. who scored
only five points and had but
three rebounds at the half, hit
an offensive rhythm in the sec
ond half and fueled a I fla ks'
run to counter that of the Hea
vers
Sporcich worked her way in
side to knock down five con
secutive lay-ins during a 17-2
scoring stretch, bringing the
Ducks as close as 10 points tie
fore Oregon State pulled away
for the win.
