Journalism minor to be offered
By Bob Waite
Emerald Reporter
For the first time in University history, the
School of Journalism will offer a minor degree.
Journalism school Dean Arnold ismach con
firmed the decision yesterday, saying also that
the school will offer two new courses next
year.
Associate Dean Greg Kerber proposed the
minor in "mass media studies” at a faculty
meeting last year. The University curriculum
committee recently approved the degree. Ker
bor said.
The new degree is offered in response to a
demand from students who want knowledge of
journalism, or do not meet major requirements
but are still interested in studying it. Kerber
said.
About 200 new journalism majors are ad
mitted each year. Next fall the journalism
school will require a 3.23 overall grade point
average. Kerber said. People who want a jour
nalism degree and who have a tower GFA will
have a more difficult time qualifying, kerber
aaid.
“Student* have been asking for a journalism
minor since I've been doing student advising,
as long as I have been here, since 1984.“ Ker
ber said.
Kerber said demand for the minor has been
particularly strong from telecommunication
and film majors, business majors and fine arts
majors.
While the minor will not be available until
next academic year, students may enroll In
courses next term that will apply to the minor
Because the school allows majors to pre-reg
ister. Kerber said journalism majors will still
have first preference to complete their required
courses.
Two new courses. Women, Minorities and
Media, and Third World Development Com
munication. will be offered next year. The
courses will fulfill the University’s new re
quirement for students to take a race, gender
or non-European American course. Is math

Rape Crisis funds transferred to ASUO
By Daralyn Trappe
Emerald Reporter
The Incidental Pee Commit
tee voted Thursday night to re
lease Si !.7fiti to the ASUO.
IFC
The money had been allocat
ed to the Rape Crisis Network
as part of the 1990-91 budget ,
but the crisis center closed per
manently this week because of
financial problems and a con
flict with the ASlJO.
The center's closure has left
University students and area
residents without a facility that
deals solely with rape counsel
ing. programs and education.
In the past, the network pro
vided education and counsel
ing services to University stu
dents in exchange for inciden
tal fees allocated through the
IKC money
The center received about 10
percent of its budget from the
ASUO.
ASUO co-President Kirk Bai
ley told the I PC at Thursday’s
meeting that several communi
ty and University groups are
planning to either expand the
services of an existing counsel
ing center or start a new rapt
crisis center.
For that reason. Hailey said,
the money allocated for the
Rape Crisis Network this year
should be kept in reserve until
an allocation can be made to a
new or expanded center.
"The money would lx? dedi
cated to these services and
couldn't be spent on anything
else,” Bailey said.
IFC member Jennifer Hills
proposed that the group trans
fur the money to the ASUO
with the stipulation that one
1KC member will sit in on nego
tiations with any rape counsel
ing service and have some s.iv
in where the money is allocat
ed.
The motion passed :t with
1FC members Hills. JoSonja
Watson and Armando Morales
in favor, and Barclay Grayson
and Michael Colson opposed
Grayson said he had reserva
tions about transferring the
sum to the ASUO because the
money is not yet targeted to a
specific group.
In other business, the IFC
voted :t-»-2 to endorse the Coke
boycott sponsored by several
student groups.
Bills. Morales and Watson
were in favor. Grayson and Col
son abstained.
