swer and not ultimatums."
Gary Bredeweg said he drove
p. st the vigil attendees several

ly stopped to offer his support
for a peaceful solution when he
heard of the failed negotiation
talks between Secretary of State
James Baker and Iraqi Foreign
Minister Tariq Aziz.
"I don't think the adminis
tration is really trying their
hardest with diplomatic meas
ures," Bredeweg said. "(They)
need to try and solve this with
out people dying.”
Another person attending the
vigil, Joe Roberts, said he was
at the vigil because he loves
America and believes it is the
greatest country on earth, but
that America should not be in
volved in other countries’ busi

America getting involved in
matters that are not our mat
ters." he said.

"They put them around the top

sand fleas."
Support for the troops re
gardless of political differences
over whether the troops should

friends in the group Pentecost
said he is afraid the public will
not support the military per
sonnet ixx.ause they disagree
with the war. In his view, for
getting the troops overseas re
peats the mistakes of Vietnam.
"We're concerned about
Congress not backing the presi
dent and it becoming another
Vietnam." Pentecost said. “I’m
not a right-winger. I'm not
against the right to protest or
free speech. Hut I don't agree
with a senator who can stand
up and say he'll cut the purse
strings of our troops because he
doesn’t agree with the war.
“We need to make sure our
troops have the equipment they
need to defend themselves. We
need to present a unified
front,” Pentecost said.
"I know there are a lot of
people protesting what’s going
on. but 1 don't know of anyone
in the support group who
agrees with them,” Grossman
added. “We’re the last ones
who want a shot to be fired, but
we do want support for those
troops over there."
As the Jan. 15 deadline ap
proaches. the group will con
tinue to offer support to each
other and send needed items to
the military personnel in the
desert. If the need arises, Pente
cost said, they will organize
without the Red Cross to stage
demonstrations to remind peo
ple of the troops overseas.
"Those are still our guys
over there, whether we agree
with the politics or not. and
they need our support." Pente
cost said. "We want to make
certain they're not forgotten. 1
don't want this to become an
other Vietnam.
