A one cent tax on carbonated
beverages and additional fund
ing to state programs were
among the recommendations
made Wednesday by the State
Task Force on Hunger follow
ing an 18-month investigation
of the hunger problem in Ore
gon
The task force found that in
1H8!I more than 380,000 Orego
nians 14 percent of the state

population — accessed the
emergency food system Al
most 50 percent of these people
are children under the age of
twelve, said task force chair
man Steve McCoid.
Currently, hunger relief ef
forts in Oregon fall to private
nonprofit agencies and tin; fed
eral government through the
Temporary Emergency Food
Assistance Program, the Food
Stamp Program and the Wom
en. Infants and Children Pro
gram
Another recommendation of
the task force involved reejuir
mg school districts to partici
pate in the national school
breakfast program by the la-gin
ning of the school year
if 2T> percent or more of the stu
dents are eligible for free or re
duced price lunches or where
other criteria are met

ings 74 percent of the schools
