Dellinger receives coach honors

named the Distri< t VIII coach of
the year by the United States

The Ducks had another suc
cessful season this tall under
Dellinger, who has been Ore
gon's cross country coa< h since
1967.
Oregon won its second
straight Pacific-10 Conference
title this past season, and de
spite being without No 1 run
ner Colin Dalton at the District
VIII meet, the Dm ks still fin
ished third and advanced to the
NCAA meet.
With Dalton back for the
NCAA meet, Oregon finished
fifth, the 14th time in Dellin
ger's coaching career that the
Ducks finished in the top five
at the NO A As.
Dellinger was also named as
the national coach of the year
for both cross country and out
door track and field during last
fall and last spring's seasons,
respectively. Dellinger has
been the head track coach since
1973, leading Oregon to 11 top
1(1 finishes 15 years, including
a national championship in
1984.
Dellinger ran under Hill
Rowerman when he competed
for th(! Ducks from 1954 to
1956. Dellinger was a three
time Olympian and won the
bronze medal in the 5,000 me
ters at the 1964 Olympics.
