Walesa wins top post in Poland
WARSAW, Poland (AP) -
I.ech Walesa, the shipyard
worker who helped lead his
country out of Communism,
swept to a landslide victory in
Poland's first popular presiden
tial vote Sunday, according to
partial returns.
Walesa defeated emigre busi
nessman Stanislaw Tyminski. a
virtual unknown before the
campaign, by 75 percent to 25
percent, according to the first
official results from 165 of the
country's more than 22,000
polling stations, the television
said.
Full official results were ex
pected late Monday, but earlier
exit polls predicted a similar
outcome.
“There are terribly difficult
tasks waiting for us,” Walesa
said as he sipped a congratula
tory glass of champagne before
the television cameras and sup
porters in Gdansk, where his
Solidarity movement began in
August 1980.
"I hope that we will be
building Poland's future to
gether. I want to behave firmly,
I want to firmly correct every
thing that is wrong, and make
firm accounts for everything
that has not been accounted for
yet.”
Outside, thousands gathered
and chanted his name over and
over. They sang "Sto 1-at," a
song that means, "May You
Live 100 Years.”
Tyminski declined to con
cede defeat immediately, say
ing he did not trust the polls.
He said he would remain active
in Polish politics.
Outgoing President VVojciech
Jaruzelski. who sent Walesa to
jail under martial law nine
years ago, sent his congratula
tions He wished the new presi
dent "fruitful activity for the
good of our homeland.”
Turnout was estimated at 53
percent, compared with about
60 percent in the first round
last month, according to pre
liminary results
The Solidarity leader and
1*183 Nobel Peace Prize laureate
had asked voters to give him a
broad mandate to lead the
country to a market economy
and a Kuropean-style democra
cy.
The exit polls showed that he
did well among all social
groups — nearly doubling the
40 percent he got in the first
round in November.
Tyminski. who performed
well in the first round, ap
peared to have been damaged
by numerous questions raised
about him at the end of the
campaign.
"I’m surprised, but I won't
make any comments at the mo
ment." Tyminski told reporters
after inspecting the returns
posted at his home voting dis
trict in Peeice. outside Warsaw
Walesa had split the Solidar
ity movement when he op
posed Prime Minister Tudeusz
Mazowiecki in the first round
of voting Nov. 25.
