Artist lament
Oh my. We artists have been
bested by kawika Holbrook
again [ODE, Dee :))!
His original attack was di
rected against members of the
marching band I have used the
word "artists" in reference to
them and myself. Some people
don't consider marching band
as art. I maintain that it is suffi
ciently art-like for my pur
poses. As a jazz musician and a
painter. I'm no less offended
just because the attack was
against the marching band.
First he hoots at the perform
ers for their incompetence,
then chastises them for not
making the most of the pre
cious gift he has made of his in
tellect. He is truly the better
man.
Well . enough irony Hol
brook said. "In your attempt to
find some truth in me you can
begin to find the truth within
yourself."
Well, thanks for the offer, but
we would rather spend our
time searching within our mu

our dancing, ourselves You

As for his remarks to the ef

an intellectual ' disservice" in
calling him names and doing
other nasty things to him. I
should say this my sense ol

That's what it means to be an
artist. Holbrook.
Therefore. I'm free to slap
him. call him a mongrel dog.
and beat him like a mule in
print without sacrificing my in
tellectual honesty.
Hoy. 1 hope he comes to my
recital next month I'd get a
real kick out of hearing his
"criticism" of that

I want to personally and for

letter of recognition of my work
[ODE. Dec. 4).
I speak from the heart when I
say that at no time during my
25-year teaching career have I
received an honor that I consid

Native American students.
It is an honor to work with

All we can be
What can we conclude from
the editorial (O/JK. Nov .10)
"Guardsman's refusal a noble
concept?"
That Operation Desert Shield
is a cynical, self-serving stupid
piece of foreign adventurism?
Certainly.
That we should commend
those few soldiers who have re
fused to deploy to Saudi Arabia
for constitutional or moral rea

the build-up is questionable,
but so is the sincerity of "con
scientious objectors" in a vol

Thai the editors of the Knwr

hypocritical bigots7 Absolute

How dare they characterize
those of us in the military as
subservient, apolitical sheep
incapable of thinking for our
selves
I know it is expecting too
much for the editors to actually
talk with some of us stu
