'I .mi <i < itiz.cn of the United

"As >i gay male I have .is mm h
right to bo here as anyone We
are people and we deserve
rights "
When the panel discussion
got under way. Cuuntv Com
miss inner Jerry Rust said the
Johnson incident was pist the
latest occurrence in "a season
of intolerance here
"There an? several incidents
that have put a stain on this
University,” he said, including
the banning of the Crateful
Dead and the Stanford March
ing Hand
Harliara Pope, director of the
women's studies department,
said she w.is “appalled by the
homophobic < hain reaction."
A blac k professor would not
be asked to apologize for dis
c tissing personal experiences in
regards to a c n il rights lecture
or in conjuncture; with Martin
Luther king. Jr. day. Pope said,
nor would a woman be cen
sured for speaking of personal
exponent es in relation to Inter
national Women’s Day.
Panel members agreed that
academic freedom is a broad
term that is difficult to define.
Hut Marlene Drescher. director
of the Office of Student Advo
cacy. said the; only limit to aca
demic freedom should be the
demeaning of another person or
group of people.
Johnson’s discussion was not
sin h an instance:, she said.
Clarence Spigner, professor
of community health. suggest
ed that the students who object
to a professor's lecture should
go straight to the professor and
discuss it, rather than going to
that person's supervisors.
When the issue of coalescing
students and student groups
arose, several audience and
panel members said that al
though people have their own
agendas and concerns, a united
front is necessary to combat
discrimination against gays and
lesbians, women and people of
color.
"It's not that the oppression
is all the same” on the campus,
said Phil Zuckerman of the
)ewish Student Union, "but the
oppressors an; all the same.”
