The poll by Moon' Informa tion of Portland also found that more than half of those re sponding favored a sales tax. Increasing most other types of taxes drew far less support Moor*' Information inter viewed 400 respondents state wide during the telephone poll, conducted Nov 1*1-20. The poll has a 5 percent margin of error. State Rep. Ted Calouri, K Beaverton, praised the poll He said it showed support for re plat ing property taxes that eventually will he limited by Measure T> to $15 per $1.00(1 of assessed value. Hut Don Mclntire. a chief sponsor of the measure passed by voters Nov. t», denounced the poll as a way to "give sus tenance and succor to those legislators of ours who are still lusting after a sales tax.” Mclntire. who opposes a sales tax, claimed the poll was skewed by the way its ques tions were phrased. The key question in the poll asked whether governments and school districts should t>e forced to operate without re placing the property tax cuts. "What this poll proves is that Oregonians art* not a miserly lot," Mclntire said Moore Information, which conducted surveys for 48 politi cal clients during the 1990 elections, cautioned that sales tax support should tic* viewed skeptically. In 1985. before a September vote that defeated a sales tax. several polls showed a majority supporting the idea. In the poll, 71 percent of re spondents favored finding oth er sources of revenue. Among those who voted for Measure 5, fiti percent believed state and local governments should look for other sources of money. When read a list of options for raising revenue, 55 percent of all respondents favored a sales tax on goods except food and medicine.
