Oregon, OSU heading in opposite directions
By Robert Weber

CORVALLIS The 35,962 people in the stands .it
Saturday's Civil War matchup saw a game that pitted
two teams passing each other in different directions
like cars on Highway 99.
While the 8-3 Oregon Ducks migrated back to Eu
gene with six weeks to get healthy and prepare for the
Freedom Bowl. Oregon State is stuck in Corvallis,
faced with a long winter that is filled with numerous
unanswered questions.
The Ducks' 6-3 victory over the t-10 Beavers
showed how far Oregon has come in the last couple of
years and how far Oregon State still has to come.
Oregon has been trying to take the final step from a
school that has good football teams to a school with a
good football program that produces solid teams year
in and year out.
The Ducks took a major step toward building that
type of reputation Saturday, overcoming obstacles in
cluding injuries to key players.

entire game, and with only minimal help from tailback
Sean Burwell and wide receivers Joe Keit/ug and Mi

chael McClellan, the Ducks looked to their defense
and special teams to lead them by the hated Heavers
Gregg McCallum and the Ducks' defense didn't disap
point.
McCallum booted two field goals and the defense
held the Heavers to l'tfl yards of total offense, includ
ing 27 yards rushing on :tH attempts
The Oregon defense knew that with or without Mus
grave. it was going to play a major role in the outcome
of the Civil War contest.
“We started out this week knowing it has to t>e a de
fensive week," nose tackle Marcus Woods said “We
didn't know if we'd have Hill or not so we knew we
had to do it on defense "
Woods, who hails from Corvallis, led the Ducks' at
tack with six tackles, inc hiding three behind the line
of scrimmage He also chipped in by causing a fumble
(recovered by the Heavers), and registering a quarter
back sack
Oregon Coach Rich Hrooks knew his team was hurt
ing and needed the defense to take charge, which is
exactly what they did
"I'm proud of the way the team played in the see
ond half,” Hrooks said. "The defense h.id to control
the game for us and they did
The Ducks’ medical list has grown almost every
weak, but it bordered on obscene during the Civil War
game. Oregon played most of Saturday's game without
six offensive skill players that started in the Ducks'
season-opener against San Diego State
Musgrave's son; shoulder kept him from playing a
down on Saturday, the first game he has missed this
year, but his injury was just the beginning for the
Ducks
During the game. Oregon lost the services of
Hurwell. Keit/ug. new starting quarterback Hoi* Hreth
ers and outside linebacker Andy Conner
Brothers and Conner were able to return and contrib
ute. Init Hurwell. who came back briefly, and Reitzug,
who watched the second half in street clothes, joined
tin* long list of Duck casualties
On the Heaver side, Coach Dave hraglhorpe saw the
game as a microcosm of the Heavers' long, frustrating
year.
I think it (the game) was appropriate," Kragthorpe
said "It was consistent with how we played all year
long We just can’t seem to get a handle on what it
takes to get the job done."
