Usually, such a movie is a comedy, where all the funny lines or situations are featured — over and over again — during those 30-second snippets that ap pear on television. And it can even hap pen for a drama or thriller In the case of Jacob 's ladder, however, not living up to its previews makes this film much better Previewed as a possible thriller where the undead chase the living, Jacob's lad der takes a turn for the better as it skill fully avoids such a plot and becomes a well-done psychological drama. Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) is a Viet nam veteran who earned his doctorate in philosophy, but decided to follow a ca reer in the postal service so he wouldn't have to think any more. The film opens with Singer in the jun gle. A couple of his buddies pass around some marijuana, and as they are talking, the enemy suddenly attacks. In the action. Singer is stabbed with a bayonet. The film then switches to pres ent-day. with Singer on the subway. Singer has flashbacks about that day Helped by a neighbor, lezrie (Elizabeth Pena) plunges facob (Tim Robbins) into an ice bath to bring down a life-threatening fever in "facob's I.adder." throughout the movie as he tries to come to grips with what actually occurred. But as he recalls more about the inci dent. and as he has flashbacks about his son who died la;fore he left for Vietnam, strange things begin to happen. Singer begins seeing demons, which he believes are chasing him. However, viewers never know if these are demons of the otherworld or of the mind. Reality also becomes misconstrued as Singer flashes to other periods in his life. Eventually. Singer and the audience are loft wondering whether Singer is alive or dead. Through it dll. Singer's only refuge is Louis (Danny Aiello), who is his chiro practor. Louis adjusts Singer's back ev ery time things go haywire. In the first portion of the film. Singer calls Louis an angel, and by the end one can only wonder if this statement isn't true. Until the end. wo don’t know if Singer is alive or dead, or what it is he must come to grips with concerning that puz zling day in Vietnam when he was wounded chestra.
