Bell snatches House seat from Dix

David Dix lost his seal in the
stale Mouse of Representatives
in a dost! race with newcomer
Marie Bell, but incumbents 1-ar
ry Campbell and Bill Dwyer
were re-elected in Tuesday's
election.
In District 41. Republican
Bell took 52 percent of the vote
compared with Dix's 48 per
cent, with 87 percent of the
vote counted.
Dix had held the seat since
1986
"Many people in the district
were ready for a change," Bell
said.
She attributed the success of
her campaign to a lot of one-on
one contact with voters and to
personal referrals from the con
tacts she has made during her
21 years in that district.
She said the most important
issue in the next legislative ses
sion will be property tax relief.
"Prioritizing our spending is
going to be super important."
she said, adding that it will be
vital to rearrange spending pri
orities to avoid cutting needed
services.
Dix said he blamed his defeat
on the focus of the campaign.
"1 think the campaign never
got focused on the issues." he
said. "The campaign was Da
vid Hix vs. David Dix. and it
never got focused on the fu
ture."
He said he would like to stay
in public service in a non-elec
tive capacity after he takes
some time off.
In District 43. University pro
fessor l.ynn Kahle was unable
to beat Republican lamry Camp
bell, who has held the seat for
12 years.
"I ran a positive campaign,
and my opponent ran a nega
tive campaign." Campbell said.
"People in the state of Oregon
are coming out against negative
campaigning."
He said he plans to represent
his district as he always has,
working for things that will
strengthen Oregon.
"I think everyone under
stands that (the important is
sue) is going to be school fund
ing and Ballot Measure 5," he
said
Kahle said he did his best in
the race against Campbell “He
had alxjut ten times as much
money as we did. and it’s hard
to run a campaign against
that.” he said
kahle said he is not sure if he
will run for office again
"I ran against (Campbell) this
time because he has a nasty
voting record," he said “I’ll
watch and see what his record
is in the next legislative session
before I decide if I'll run

Dwyer was elected to a third
term to the House in a non-con
tested race.
Dwyer said his win was no
different than if he had been
opposed.
”1 still try to keep in touch
with the people," he said. "I
still represent the people and if
I didn't do a good job. they
wouldn't elect me.”
He agrees that property taxes
will be a key issue next session,
and that it will take creative fi
nancing to find funds for
schools if property taxes are re
duced.
He said that it is inevitable
that a sales tax proposal will
come up. "but whether the
people will buy it is another
thing."
DeFazio gains 3rd term

Incumbent Democrat Peter
DeFazio emerged the victor in
the race for Oregon's represen
tative District 4, capturing Hfi
percent of the vote against Lib
ertarian challenger Tonie Na
than.
With 73 percent of the pre
cincts reporting. DeFazio had
received about 101).400 votes
while Nathan had about 16.200
votes.
"This is a much higher per
centage than I expected," De
Fazio said Tuesday night. "I'm
obviously very pleased about
the tremendous show of confi
dence from people in the dis
trict.”
He said he was pleased with
the election results in light of
the anti-incumbency mood
among voters in this election,
and said his win may reflect
the fact that voters do not see
him as negatively as they view’
other incumbents.
Meanwhile, Nathan said she
was unhappy with the results
of the election and wished she
had captured a larger percent
age of the vote.

Nathan said she is thinking
about running for the same po
sition in the 1992 election be
cause she believes people
would agree with her stance on
many issues, but she added
that to run a race "you have to
have billions of dollars."
Nevertheless. DeFazio has
been given another two years in
the U.S. House of Representa
tives to work on issues such as
reducing the military budget
and enacting child care legisla
tion
"I've got a long list," he
said.
