SPORTS
Oregon falls
to Sun Devils
in four games
The Oregon volleyball team
will likely be staying home
tome NCAA Tournament time.
The Ducks needed a sweep of
the Arizona schools this week
to have any hopes of making
post-season play, but those
hopes went out the window
when Arizona State beat Ore
gon 9-15. 15-6. 15-9. 15-12 at
Tempe
Oregon falls to 5-8 in Pacific
It) Conference and 14-10 over
all. while the Sun Devils went
one-half game ahead of the
Ducks in the conference stand
ings with the win. Arizona
State is now 6-8 in the Pac-10
and 15-12 overall and avenged
an earlier loss to the Ducks this
season.
The Ducks have now lost
three in a row after dropping
home matches last weekend to
USC and UCLA. Oregon is now
2-6 in its last eight matches af
ter starting the season 12-4.
Dawnn Charroin paced Ore
gon with 12 kills and 12 digs
but it wasn't enough to offset a
12-kill night for the Sun Devils'
Nancy Christian. Debbie Plais
ted and Mindy Cowell. The
three were unstoppable the en
tire match and carried Arizona
State to the win
Cowell also paced Arizona
State with 15 digs while Plais
ted added 13. Ali Watkins also
had 12 kills for Oregon to team
with Charroin for the team
lead, although both players
were hobbled by ankle injuries
coming into the match.
Julie Jeffrey also had nine
digs for the Ducks while
Mindee Adams chipped in sev
en kills and eight digs.
Oregon came out strong and
took the opening game on the
strength of a .300 hitting per
i outage but the Ducks fell off to
only .150 for the match The
Sun Devils also hit only .150
for the match but had 18 more
digs and four more service aces
than Oregon did
The Ducks return to action
tonight when they travel to
Tucson. Ariz to face the Arizo
na Wildcats at 6 p m PST The
Dm ks lost earlier this season to
the W ildcats in Kugene as Ari
zona took a five-game affair at
McArthur Court
Oregon will return home and
host the Washington schools
next weekend
