"Coach (Rich) Brooks re minded us of that before the game." Harwell said "Oregon is a physical footlrall team and they better lie ready when they play us." fust like they did against Brigham Young. Oregon's de fense answered the opening liell with a flurry and never let up on the wav to their first shutout since a -4‘to blanking of tong Beach State at the be ginning of the 1988 season Stanford had five possessions during the first period and each one ended with a punt The Cardinal ended the quarter with 15 yards of total offense on 15 offensive plays, and Stanford made only one ap pearance in Oregon territory The Ducks held the Cardinal offense in check all day. allow ing Stanford only lot yards rushing and 107 yards passing on 21 completions. Mavbe now Green should ask his players if they think Oregon is as physical as somebody like Notre Dame or Colorado, or even Washington After all, Stanford ran over and through the Irish for a :tti-:i1 win at Notre Dame and Photo b> Sr an Ponton Linebacker fames Bautista had one of Oregon’s three interceptions, and the Duck defense gave Stanford a lesson in physical play by completely shutting down the Cardinal running game. led Colorado on the road until the final minute of the game And yet they couldn't even get inside Oregon's 34-yard line the entire day, unless of course they were covering one of Paul Stonehouse's 11 punts. Not even Washington's "Pur ple Haze," considered by many to l>e the most physical defen sive team in the nation, could throw a shutout at the Cardinal in their 52-1(» rout last week. Cardinal quarterback Jason Palumbis, playing in front of friends and family in iiis home state, didn't have the type of game that Oregonians came to expect from him during his days at Lakeridge High School in I Jike Oswego. He finished the first quarter with five completions in eight attempts for a whopping four (no. that's not a misprint) yards. Most of his success in the quarter involved the multi talented Olyn Milburn. who (.aught three passes for one yard The shutout was something that nobody really expected, but the Ducks were not alxiut to let go of one once it liegan to appear possible. "We want shutouts against Utah State and teams like that," nose tackle Marcus Woods said "We never really expected it against a team like this." Woods and Harwell received a lot of help from free safety Kric Castle and junior-college transfer Devon Hosey in lead ing the charge against the Car dinal. Castle, a sophomore making only his sixth career start for Oregon, played center field for the Ducks all afternoon making nine unassisted tackles and as sisting on seven others. He con tinued to draw praise from both brooks and defensive coordina tor Dennny Schuler for his out standing play. "Krii: C last It; is a great foot ball player in anybody's league anywhere." Brooks said, "lie saves us a lot track there. " "So many times it looks like somebody is going to break one," Schuler added, "and then here comes Castle out of right field to make the hit." tfosey, playing in only his second game of the year, made his second career interception one to remember by racing 7(> yards for a touchdown that all but sealed the game. That makes it two weeks in a row that the defense has scored as many, or more, points than the opposition. Not bad for a team that isn't very physical Where will you buy your replacement solutions?
