Studies link Trojan emissions to diseases
By Brian Bloch
Emerakl Reporter
With just 12 days left until
the Nov. 6 election, and with
the fate of the Trojan nuclear
power plant hanging in the
balance, two nationally known
experts warned students
Thursday of the dangers sur
rounding the plant's contin
ued operation
Dr Earnest Sterngiass of the
University of Pittsburgh's l)e
pertinent of Radiology. and Dr
j.M Gould of the Radiation
and Public Health Project in
New York said emissions of ra
dinactive materials from the
plant can be directly correlated
to increases in various mortali
ty and cancer rates.
A study illustrating total
cancer rates in the state by
year linked rises in those rates
with the Trojan start-up in
1975. a fuel leakage in 1981
and the Chernobyl radiation
release in 198fi
"In each of three individual
instances we have evidence
provided by the state health
department that a significant
rise in cancer rates took
place." Sternglass said "It
cannot !«• explained that this
could lie caused hy anything
else
The mortality rate in Colum
bia County is the highest of
any other county in the state,
while leukemia rates in nearby
Multnomah and Washington
counties far surpass those of
counties farther away from the
plant, he said.
In addition. Sternglass said
increases in levels of strontium
90, a radioactive byproduct of
nuclear fission, have been sta
tistically linked to surges in
the rates of venereal disease.
AIDS, asthma and viral dis
eases because of the isotope's
effect on the human immune
system
