    WOODS
Continued from Page 2
After moving from Texas to
Corvallis. Woods saw plants of
Oregon State games but decid
ed to come to Oregon because
be wanted to play for a team on
the rise in the Pac-10. Woods
said he never really considered
going to a college far from
home because of his mother.
Bertha.
“She only got to see four of
my brother's games after we
moved from Texas and one of
those was the national champi
onship game." Woods said
“My mom is the biggest sports
fan and goes to all of our
games.
“It really kills her to miss
one of our games and if we
went some place else and she
couldn't see us play, she would
just die," he said.
Woods made an immediate
impact when he arrived at Ore
gon two years ago. being the
only true freshman to play on
defense.
He had two quarterback sacks
while backing up David Cusano
at nose tacklft and last year con
tinued to excel in a back-up
role, spelling Cusano at times
and also playing in Oregon's
four-man line on passing situa
tions.
Woods admitted he didn't
expect to have such an impact
as a true freshman but once be
started playing, lack of experi
ence was not a factor.
“I was surprised at first," he
said “The only thing was that
1 needed to learn and respond
to what 1 saw out there. Onc e I
played, 1 picked up things pret
ty fast bec ause I'm a fast learn
er."

ued to play well in limited situ
ations with three quarterbat Is
sacks and five tackles for lost

Oregon Coach Ki< h brooks
knew what Woods could do
hut was.a little concerned abonl
Woods' ability to stay healthy
when playing all ot the time
"I thought Marcus woultl hi
a very good player but my feat
was that Marcus would miss
some time with nagging inju
ries which he has." brooks
said.
Woods has been banged ti|
quite a bit this season with an
kle problems and other injure
including missing most (it tin
Washington game with a bar
ankle.
In that game. Woods missel
most of the second quarter ant
the entire second half When ht

"That was the worst feel

When Woods is healthy,
there are few nose tackles
around that are any better His

among Oregon's top lit list

Not only does Woods have
great size at ti foot-2. 2H.I
pounds, he has tremendous
quit kness that allows him to
shed hint kers and get to the
qoarterbui k in a hurry
In fact. Woods is probably
the quickest defensive lineman
brooks has coached in 14 years
at (Iregon
"He's as quick probably and
he's quicker than he is fast.”
brooks said "He has good size
and the most important thing is
lie has great instinctive real lion
skills He can read the blot king

better than most of the linemen
we've had in the past
That's a frightening thought

That I’alumbis is back starting

But in the off-season I’alumhis
