Barefootin’
Sometimes men make horri
ble generalizations about wom
en that they should stay at
home cooking, cleaning and
raising the children — "keep
them barefoot . etc . " and that
women are only good for one
thing This attitude fosters ster
eotypes of social roles based on
sex, and that is wrong These
are the types of men who look
at women as "meat.”
However, it is not these men
who are the real problem. The
problems are the generaliza
tions that hurt nil women and
societv as a whole Kuna Dole,
as outraged as she is at her situ
.ition. makes just as harmful
generalizations about men
To say that all men are sex
starved barbarians who only
see women as objects, is the
same kind ol attitudes that pro
motes sexism, as well as rac
ism; it is wrong. Dole, you are
just as much a part of the prob
lem as the men in your letter
You criticize and condemn all
men when you make general
izations.
Do you actually think that ev
ery man on this campus lusts
after your body? Don't flatter
yourself.

Humble pie
We went to watch a name up
North on 1-5, in the city of Seat
tle where the dawgs are flying
high
We went to watch our
duckies eat some dawg meat
stew that day, cause we knew
that our duckies had really
come to play.
But when the game was over,
though our duckies really tried,
all that we could manage to say
was pass the humble pie.

Courtesy return
Last Thursday, I checked out
a tiny book from the knight Li
brary and had the misfortune of
dropping it somewhere be
tween the library and my car.
1 was not too happy with the
prospect of paying $40 to re
place what may have been a $5
or $10 book. You can imagine
how thrilled I was to find out
Oregon Daily Emerald
that someone had found the
book and had the courtesy to
return it.
So to you and anyone else
who has found and returned
lost library books in the past;
Thank you. you made my day

Feel special
The recent "coming out” ral
Iv fur the University's homo
sexual community was disgust
ing What makes these people
feel that they are so special
they need to force their collec
tive experiences on the rest of
us unwary passersby?
The only apparent reason for
this gathering seems to have
been to make us all feel sorry
for these poor, oppressed folk
If 1 were to hold an anti-com
ing out week I would be
hounded and told that I am an
insensitive homophobe. This is
not the case at all True I find
homosexuality to be repulsive
(if this makes me a homophobe,
then I accept the title with
pleasure) However. I do not
believe that homosexuals ought
to be driven from the communi
ty.
1 simply do not want to lie
told by homosexuals that my
feelings are wrong any more
than they wish to In* told the
same by me To put it bluntly,
stop whining about nobody un
derstanding you. maybe they
do and reject you because of it

Take control
Rotative to the firing of lean
Ownbey as controller of the Or
egon Daily Emerald. I would
like to make a few comments
regarding this deceitful display
of authority, not by the com
mittee as a whole, but the two
or three-member personnel
committee.
Ownbey was not given the
opportunity to present her case
to the board as a whole and fur
ther the board was not in
formed of the committee's deci
sion to fire lean until the even
ing before her termination.
This procedure was EWEB
revisited! However, in the case
of the ODE board. no recourse
is available to recall members.
Students, this is your paper
and it should lx- controlled by
you Thu composition of the
board of directors has xut to
chantft' The hoard should lx* at
least three fourths of students
A Iwiard of seven students and
three at large positions, two of
which would lx' appointed by
the president of the University
from the faculty or staff would
preclude this type of action be
mg taken in the future
keep your paper out of the
hands of Register -Guardiles
1 was in a position to hear the
lies "No hatchet job."
“lean's position will not
change." etc . coming from the
personnel committee of the
Ixiard. end then watched the
manipulative efforts of the
"personnel committee" (usual
ly minus the student represen
tative).
Students. I encourage you to
take control and provide a
means whereby board members
can be replaced Remember,
power and authority unchecked
can bo dangerous.

Few answers
Peter Cogswell's article "Of
ficials allow press to view mon
key habitat," (ODE Oct 18).
leaves many unanswered ques
tions and few answers.
At no time does Cogswell say
whether lie actually saw the an
imals. The descriptions of the
rooms and cages were present
ed as indirect quotes from
Vanderlip.
The lead paragraph indicates
reporters "were allowed to
view and photograph two Rhe
sus monkeys." but says noth
ing about whether the reporters
viewed the other animals.
Sean Poston's photo of one
Rhesus monkey showed none
of the amenities described by
Vanderlip. Presumably, this
was the best photo he could
provide given the pro status
quo slant of the story.
This story is an example of
what is called "canned news."
It appears to lie little more than
an edited press release.
I would take the University's
word more seriously if SETA or
another animal rights group
had been invited to tour the fa
cility with the reporters to pres
ent their view Mkhae|Wes|ey
