Duck teams win meet,
go for Pac-K) titles next
By Jake Berg
Emerald Conlnbulor
If the Jeff Drenth Memorial
cross country meet is an indica
tor of the power of Oregon's
teams, the rest of the Pacific-10
Conference schools had better
brace themselves.
Cleaning house is a good way
of describing what the Ducks
did Saturday to the competition
at Eugene's Alton Baker Park.
The eighth-ranked women's
team and the ninth-ranked
men's squad won the team ti
tles in front of an inspirational
hometown crowd of spectators.

It was the final run for lx>th
units l>efore the Out 27 Pac-10
Championships at Stanford.
"We'll be ready in two
weeks." said women’s coach
Tom Heinonen of the Pac-10
meet.
His team easily beat North
Carolina State by 23 points,
scoring 30 points to the Wolf
pack's 53.
Annette Peters, a 1988 Ore
gon graduate, won her third
Drenth Memorial in a row with
a time of 18:57 to best the over
all field over the 5.000-meter
course.
"I didn’t want to go out and
lead, but I did," said Peters
"Once I got out in front, 1 just
pressed it."
Oregon seniors Stephanie
Wessell and Liz Wilson took
first and second among colle
gian runners, respectively, after
Peters, at the meet It was
somewhat of a role reversal for
the pair, as Wilson won the top
individual honors at the Ducks'
previous two meets with Wes
sell at second overall in both.
Wessell's first place colle
giate time came in 17:10 and
Wilson ran in 17:13. Other Ore
gon places included Nicole
Woodward who was fifth with
17:29 while Lucy Nusrala fin
ished ninth at 17:50, and Julia
Saul rounded out the team
scoring with a 13th place run of
17:56.
“They raced real well," said
Heinonen, "but it's hard to run
two weeks in a row."
Stephanie VVessell
Junior Colin Dalton run to a
second place overall finish to
lead the Duck men past second
place Washington. Oregon's
score of 48 points beat the 14th
ranked Huskies’ 61. The Ducks
also ran a "B" team that placed
eighth with 197 points.
North Carolina State's Bob
Menus outsprinted Dalton on
the last leg to the finish line.
Denes' time of 23:56 was a
breath ahead of Dalton's 23:5?
on the 8,000-meter course.
Oregon's Pat Haller was close
behind at sixth place in 24:14,
freshman Andy Maris was third
for the Ducks and 13th overall
with a 24:39 run. Kick Mustier
took 15th place at 24:43. and
Shannon Lemora was fifth for
Oregon with a 24:54 race.
"I'm pleased with the overall
performance," said men's
coach Bill Dellinger. "They ran
well "
