Ducks cannot afford to look past Aggies
By Ashley Conklin
£ me raid Sports fcd'IO'
Oregon Conch Kith Brooks
says his team is at the same
point they were a year ago. but
hopes his team doesn't play
like they did at this time last
season
The Ducks. currently 11 and
ranked 22nd in the latest Asso
ciated Press Top 25 poll, were
3-1 and ranked 2.1 rd after four
| games last season After the
bucks quir k start though they
wont 2-3 in their next five
games and were 5 4 after a
45-41 loss to Brigham Young
This season. Oregon is corn
ing off a 12-Hi win over the
Cougars, but Brooks is con
cerned with the Dm ks falling
into another mid season slump
like they did a year ago
"Certainly we were in a pret
ty good position a year ago."
Brooks said "We were 1-1 and
then lost some tough games in
the middle of the season I'm
hoping we can avoid a mid sea
son slump this year and contin
ue to improve every week
"It's not as much as where
we are now as where we need
to go to continue to win." he
added, "and if we don't get
any In-Iter and level off and
stop improving, then our sea
son won't lie what we'd like to
be "
As Oregon heads into .Satur
day's non-conference game
with Utah State, the Ducks are
in a very precarious position.
They're coming off a huge win
over the (Cougars and have a big
l’acific-10 Conference show
down next Saturday with
Washington at Husky Stadium
Hut this week's game is with
the 1-2 Aggies of the Big West
Conference and the Ducks can't
look hack too much at the BYU
win or too far ahead to the
Washington game
"i think they understand the
importance of ear h win in the
win column and each loss in
the loss column." Brooks said
of his team "Certainly what
we've accomplished so lar
would lx- destroyed if we go
out and play sloppily and not
play up to our capabilities and
lose the football game."
Many people are expecting
the Ducks to win this one in a
walk, like previous wins over
San Diego State and Idaho.
There are more than a few con
cerns with Utah State for
Brooks, however, than just try
ing to get his team motivated
The Aggies haven't played a
game since they lost to Missou
ri 45-10 back on Sept. 15 and

Oregon's defense will need another strong performance from Matt LaBounty (90), Marcus \U>ods (69) and
Kory Dairy (3) if the Ducks are to continue their winning ways.

pare for the Ducks (Compound
ing matters for Oregon is the
explosiveni'ss of running fun k
Roger Grant and quarterback
Ron Lopez
Grant has rushed for :HI5
yards and is averaging ti 1
yards per attempt through three
games while Lopez, a junior
college transfer from I,os An
geles. has taken over the start
ing job from Kirk lohnson
"They have a tremendous
running track in Grant." Brooks
said "They re had three weeks
(to prepare tor Oregon) and
they 're going now v\ 11h a |G
quarterbai k and I'm not sure
how moth they II change their
offense
Utah State is hoping for a
change in its passing game af
ter a dismal showing in the first
three games where Aggie quar
terbaeks completed only 4a
percent of their passes and
threw lor only Sill yards
Brooks said the change to 1 .«»
pez should make Utah State a
better team.
“Lopez is a very good ath
lete. a very good quarterback."
Brooks saici "(He's) a very
good passer I think they feel
he's the- type of young man that
can lead them into the end
