SPORTS Men’s water polo takes two wins Two Club Sports teams were in action during the first w'eek of school, each having good re sults. The men’s club water polo team competed in a five-team tournament in Canada and won two of four games. Oregon’s team beat Washing ton 12-4 and the University of Victoria 6-5 but lost to Simon Fraser 4-2 and to the University of British Columbia by a 16-11 count. Coach Sean Broderick said that his team had only two days of practice before the tourna ment while the Canadian schools had been in school and practicing for a month and a half. "All the players except for three or four are new and all of the guys have never played to gether before," he said. "We haven't meshed together yet, and when we do, it will be a big benefit for our next tourna ment in two weeks." Ducks ranked in national polls The Oregon football team isn't the only Duck team in a Top 20 or Top 25 poll this week as two more teams are ranked in NCAA polls and a third is teetering on the border. Both Oregon cross country teams are in the rankings, with the men checking in at No tt in the men's Top 20 poll and the women holding down the No 11 ranking in the women's Top 25 poll. Meanwhile, the Duck vol leyball team continues to re ceive votes for the NCAA and Tachikara/AVCA polls, but fell short of the Top 20 this week. The men's cross country team was sixth last week, but fell three spots after finishing second in the Mountain West Classic this past weekend in Missoula. Mont. Kentucky, which won the Classic, is tied for 14th this week along with Dartmouth. Iowa State is ranked No. 1 in the men's poll this week, with Arkansas second and Wiscon sin third. Two Pacific-10 Con ference teams besides the Ducks are also in the Top 20 this week, with Arizona at No. 6 and Washington at No. 12. The women's cross country team is the highest ranked Pac 10 team, while two other con ference schools are in the Top 25 with Washington State at No. 15 and Arizona ranked 24th Coach Tom Heinonen's team will be back in action this weekend when they travel to the GBS/Nike Invitational in Minneapolis. Minn. The men's team will be off this week but will compete in the |eff Drenth Memorial at Alton Baker Park on Oct. 13 as will the women's team. Coach (Jerry Gregory's vol leyball team received votes in both polls, being one of only three teams to receive votes in the Tachikara poll and not make the Top 20. The Ducks were also one of only seven teams to receive votes in the NCAA poll and not break into the Top 20. Ben Mclver and Mark Miksis led Oregon in scoring, which uses this as one of its tourna ments for seeding purposes for the Nor-Pac Championships Oregon competes in the Nor i’ac along with Portland St.ite, Washington, Washington State and the three Canadian schools that were in last week’s tourna ment. Broderick said he felt Oregon played well in the tournament and likes his team's overall tal ent. "I have a lot of talent to work with." he said "We have a good offense and a good de fense. It will be a major advan tage to get some practice in." Oregon will la* off this week end but will return to action Oct 13 in a tournament in Puyallup, Wash sponsored by the University of Washington The men's club soccer team also was in action last week, as it tieat Evergreen State College 2-1 in Olympia, Wash Oregon scored on goals by Sam Maccarrone and Andy C.agmer to pull off the victory.
