Comerback Daryle Smith has been honored with two defen sive awards following Oregon's 32-lft victory over Brigham Young last Saturday while quarterback Bill Musgrave has been chosen as one publica tion’s college player of the week and offensive guard Bud Bowie has garnered an academ ic award. Smith intercepted three of BYU quarterback Ty Dettner's passes to spark the Ducks' vic tory and also broke up four more passes. On Monday. Smith was chosen as Pacific-10 Conference defensive player of the week, and on Wednesday Sports lllustratfd announced that it chose Smith as its defen sive player of the week Smith, a junior from Los An geles. redshirted last season af ter transferring from Los An geles Valley junior College. He stepped into the right corner back position after Daryl Reed used up his eligibility last sea son Smith currently leads the team and is tied for the Pac-10 lead with four interceptions. Daryle Smith He also is tied for third nation ally in interceptions. He is the third Duck to be picked for a Pac-10 award in the last four weeks. Musgrave was the conference offensive player of the week after Oregon l»eat San Diego State, and Mi chael McClellan was special teams player of the week fol lowing the Idaho game. Musgrave was chosen by Football Sews as its college player of the week for his per formance against BYU. The senior from Crand Junc tion, Colo , completed 23 of 37 passes for 2Bt> yards and three touchdowns. Away from the field, Bowie is Oregon's third recipient of the Honda Scholar Athlete of the Week award, chosen by ABC-TV. Bowie is a junior from Cen tral Point who attended North Medford High School. Bowie saw little playing time as a freshman and sophomore, but he has started at right guard for the Ducks in all four of their games this season. Bowie has a 3.04 grade point average in bi ology. The Honda Scholar Athlete of the Week program is in its third year and has honored for mer Duck linebacker Scott Kozak and last year chose Mus grave for the honor.
