that UCLA put on them Friday
night
The Bruins, ranked first or
second in both national polls
last week, blistered the Ducks
15-3. 15-2. 15-3 in a match that
lasted less than an hour.
The weekend split left the
Ducks all alone in third place
in the Pacific-10 Conference
with an 11-4 overall record and
3-2 conference mark.
"We didn't play very well
and UCLA played great, in fact,
they had a near-perfect match."
Oregon Coach Gerry Gregory
said.
"We didn’t hit for a very
high efficiency and our biggest
problem was that we didn't
pass well enough to run our of
fense against a good blocking
team in UCLA," Gregory said.
"It was an awful combination
for us so the match didn't last
very long."
Natalie Williams led the Bru
in attack with 15 kills and an
amazing .619 hitting percent
age as UCLA finished the
match with 41 kills and a .493
team hitting percentage The
win left UCLA alone at the top
of the Pac-10 with a 5-0 Pac-10
record and 12-1 overall record.
The Ducks were held to 25
kills and a 025 hitting percent
age as juniors Dawnn Charroin
and |ulie Jeffery paced the team
with seven kills each. Oregon
was also outblocked seven to
two for the match.
Despite the blowout Friday
night, the Ducks refused to give
up on the entire trip. They re
grouped and outfought the Tro
ians for a big road win in con
ference play Saturday.
"It was a good road victory
for us and should help put us
in a position for post-season
play,” Gregory said.
"Molly McGrath had one of
her finest matches ever for us,
setting the ball very well and
hitting for a high efficiency,"
Gregory said. "Julie Jeffery and
Marcie Price also played very
well for us."
Against the Trojans, the
Ducks were more effective at
the net and the service line
than they were against UCLA,
pounding out 55 kills and scor
ing 11 service aces. As a team,
the Ducks managed only a .188
hitting percentage but were
able to hold the Trojans to a
.182 mark.
The Ducks will spend this
week preparing for the Arizona
schools. Arizona State comes to
McArthur Court on Friday
night while the Wildcats of Ari
zona visit Oregon Saturday.
