Photo ht S*«n Poolon Duck football fans had a lot to cheer about Saturday as Ontgon upset Brifiham Young 32-18. crowd of 45,022. the thirtlhird largest in Autzen Stadium history, was on hand. Continued from Page 6 zone for a safety by Marcus Woods to make it 9-0, Oregon. The success the Ducks had in containing Detmer was never more evident than it was on the first two series. The key. Brooks said, was to keep out side containment on Detmer and not let him escape the rush by leaving the pocket. “We brought pressure from the outside and 1 think that's the main thing we did that they didn't expect because they kept trying to rollout early," Brooks said, “and there was always somebody there to stop him.” "Our containment really did a good job of keeping Detmer in the pocket,” said defensive co ordinator Denny Schuler, the one responsible for all of the different defenses Oregon threw at BYU. When Detmer wasn't getting sacked he was being intercept ed. Three times cornerback Daryle Smith came away with interceptions and free safety Steve Kemp picked off two more passes. All three of Smith’s intercep tions were made when he jumped for a high pass from Detmer and two of the passes were picked off in the end zone. Kemp also intercepted one pass in the end zone and r another inside the Oregon 20 yard line. ’’Daryle went up and re bounded a couple of passes that could have gone either way," Schuler said. "They were jump balls and he came down with them.” "My hat's off to him and Steve Kemp did a nice job of being in the right place at the right time and catching the ball," he said. "That's some thing we've really struggled with the first couple of weeks. We couldn't seem to catch one." Oregon had intercepted only one pass in its first three games and had only two total take aways. But against BYU, the Ducks had four more takeaways than giveaways, the first time this season they forced more turnovers than they gave away. And when the Cuugars weren’t getting sacked or inter cepted. they were going in re verse on the ground. The mi nus 47 yards rushing was an Autzen and school record for fewest rushing yards and a big key to the final outcome. "Obviously it was key be cause the way we defensed them in the pass 1 felt we were vulnerable, particularly to their trap draw and we stopped it," Brooks said. "That was key be cause we didn’t want to bring our contain people in tighter because we wouldn't lie able to keep Detmer in the pocket. " While the Cougar ground game didn't get going in the second quarter after the horren dous first period, the passing game did. Detmer led the Cougars into Oregon territory three limes in the second quarter, but came away with only seven points as Detmer threw one touchdown pass and was intercepted in the end zone twice The closest BYU got the rest of the way was 12-10 early in the third period when Earl Kauffman hit a 40-yard field goal. The Oregon offense was sput tering. gaining only one first down in the second quarter, and it looked like the Cougars might make their run. At least that's what BYU Coach LaVell Edwards thought. "1 thought we'd play well the second half and come out of here with a victory," he said. Musgrave, though, led the Ducks on three straight touch down drives to give Oregon a commanding 32-to lead with 12:38 left in the game On the first drive. Musgrave completed four of five passes and hit Michael McClellan for a 12-yard touchdown. On the fol lowing drive. Musgrave hit a wide-open Jeff Thomason over the middle and the play went 31 yards for six morn points. Finally. Musgrave's passing and Burwell's running — 104 yards on 28 carries for the day — gave the Ducks a first-and goal on the eight and two plays later the Oregon quarterback scored on a three-yard carry up the middle. Musgrave said he felt more comfortable in the second half and that was what made the Duck offense go. "A lot of it out there is when we feel like we get in a groove," he said. "The whole first half I'd didn’t feel like I got that rhythm. "Finally in the third quarter we started hitting some passes on first down.” Musgrave said, “and when I can do that 1 think those guys are in trouble be cause we can do anything we want on second down." Detmer tried to rally the Cou gars and got a big play after Musgrave’s touchdown when he hit Micah Matsuzaki on an out-and-up play that went 69 yards and pulled BYU within 32- 16. But unlike last year's game when the Cougars were behind 33- 14 before Detmer picked apart the Oregon secondary, there was no comeback this time. "The coaches had a good game plan." Smith said. “They came up with ways to cover their receivers and it worked." It was the defensive game plan, surprisingly enough, not the offensive one that made the difference.
