ZJ Continued from Page 3 records and finished ninth in the Heisman ballot ing He completed 235 of 362 passes for 4,560 yards and 32 touchdowns. He led the NCAA in passing efficiency with a 175.6 rating, the second-best mark ever, and perhaps the most amazing thing was that he threw for more than 300 yards in ev ery game. Detmer has been even better this season, com pleting 68.6 percent of his passes for 1.755 yards and 12 touchdowns in only four games, includ ing the big win over Miami where he was 36 of 54 for 406 yards and three scores. While Edwards acknowledges that all the quar terbacks he's had are different. Detmer does the same great things that his predecessors did. "They all have strengths and the way they do things." Edwards explained. “I think they have all had that decision making ability. It's a thing that's important in all of them." And Edwards is not reluctant to compare Detmer to all the rest. "Ty Detmer is as good an on the field leader as well as on the field player as we've ever had." he said. That was evident in the game with Miami when Detmer suffered a gash underneath his chin that had to be taped up and patched together iust so he could play. On two touchdowns he avoided sacks to get the ball into the end zone. Oregon Coach Rich Brooks, whose team has to face BYU Saturday at Autzen Stadium, said it's Detmer's competitiveness that stands out when sizing him up "He's one of the toughest quarterbacks I've Men," he said. "The Miami game, when he had his chin split open, and he just comes right back He looks like he enjoys playing the game so much and he's such a competitor that If something goes wrong it doesn't bother him. He comes right back and makes something good happen." Detmer enjoys the game so much he doesn't mind the attention he gets in Provo tfnd likes be ing accessible to the fans "That's the fun part of playing college foot ball." he said. "You're in a college town and ev erybody knows you and 1 don't mind people com ing up to me and asking for an autograph or talk ing about a game. "They're the fans.” Detmer said, "and the ones you're playing for. I appreciate the support and everything, so l don't have any problems with it." The Heisman is also in the back of Detmer's mind, but he would rather win foi* the school's sake than his own. "They've certainly had some great quarter backs here who probably deserved it as much as anyone." Detmer said "Things just didn't work out for them. I'm not going to put all my marbles into the Heisman Trophy. "That'll come after the year is over." he added. "I can’t worry about that while I'm out playing right now." But right now may bo the time BYU has its Ty to the Heisman. I ◄S I AM ► Editor: Ashley Conklin Contributors: Paul Mor gan. Robert Weber Copy Editors: Chris Bouneff.
