Children
The ROTC program is a posi
tive opportunity for many stu
dents on university campuses
nationwide Tor those who
would not Ire able to complete
their education otherwise, it of
fers invaluable assistance and
support
Yet. idl of those involved
with the ROTC program have
made a conscious choice; to be
then;. Whether or not they ui
cept the militaristic principles
on which it is based, they are
capable of understanding their
implications As adults they
have the ability to make their
own decisions and 1 respect
those they have made.
Children, however, do not
make their own decisions. I am
appalled that the ROTC has the
gall to train a small child how
to use an automatic weapon
There is no excuse for the scene
pictured on page three of the
june 1 Oregon Daily Emerald
A young child w ith his finger
on the trigger of a weapon
longer than he is tall is a sick
example of a paranoid, narrow
minded, heartless country
The Cold War is over. Please,
let's stop training our children
to be soldiers. They need to
learn that this is a world of peo
ple, not a world of enemies.
