Woes of governor's
wife needlessly told
Was it an int redibly slow news day or something?
Not really Nevertheless. The Retfistar-Ouard's front
page lead story last Saturday was a quasi-expose on
Margie Goldschmidt, "a private person in a public
life."
The artii le t ame three days after Gov Neil Gold
schmidt announced he would not seek a second term
in office Me revealed that he and his wife of Lf?> years
were separating, whir h was the main reason for Ins de
( ision not to run again The news ol the separation
should be all we need to know about tfie situation
Most of the public isn't (.racing to know all the gorv
details concerning the breakup and even if we were,
that information still isn't worthy of a front-page store
Win the Guard feels we should beat all tin* details
ol a marriage on the rocks is questionable But the
worst aspect of the situation i om erns 1 Vie Witionul F.n
ijuiri'r-type approach the article exhibited
The stoic took on a gossipy tone from the start, re
iving on unnamed acquaintances and '"sources echo
know the i ouple" for information on her personal life
Fhe article repeatedly described how adamant
Goldschmidt has been about keeping her private life
plicate throughout her husband's political career So
tile paper der ides to splash the story and all its "roe
elations across the front page complete with color
photo Makes sense
Ihe caption under the photo reads that Gold
si hmidt "shuns the limelight as vigorously as her hus
band seeks it " The irony ot all this is obvious and
laughable hut it's a sate bet Margie didn't get mm h ol
a ki< k out this linnet ess.iry public itv
(Jt course anyone who is related to such a public
person as Neil Goldschmidt should expec t a dimin
ished right to privacy. But the separation is news only
because it is the reason behind Goldsc hmidt's political
dec ision 1 hoio is no sc andal or disgrace here, only an
unfortunate end to a long man iage
To make matters worse, one ot the main sources tor
the "scoop" about Margie Goldschmidt's unhappiness
with hri marriage came from an interior designer who
dec.orated the governor's mansion in 1 UK7 Now there's
a great sourc e for intimate details about the couple,
isn't it:’
The article employed tabloid tactics to sensational
ize the couple's separation and Margie Goldschmidt's
private life Now the question is, should we expect
more of this type of gossipy "news" on the front page
of the Guard? Are we to look forward to more confi
dential details from interior designers?
Inquiring minds want to know.
